I have a U5000 that just started losing sync. It began a couple of days ago. When I would first turn the game on it would look like this.....

After a couple of minutes it would straighten out and be clear. It would work fine until I turned it off and when I turned it on it would look like this again. Now it does not clear up and constantly produces this piciture. The screen is not rolling. It looks like a common sync problem created by the wrong input wiring, but that is not the case. I even redid the sync wires coming from the harness and nothing changed. The behavior of clearing up after it gets warm the first couple of times makes me think cold solder joint so I am fixing to take the chassis off and reflow it. Any suggestions on areas I should pay particularly close attention to? Thanks in advance.

Well, have you tried adjusting the horizontal hold?

And when was the last time this thing had new caps installed?

And of course, check the solder at the input pins.

And verify there is no crack in the horizontal hold pot.

After that, the most common cause of bad sync (assuming it's hooked up right) is Q700 (2N3904), followed by D700 (1N4148). Then you can check IC2 and IC1 after that.

Thanks modessitt. I did try the h hold. No help. I just did a cap kit on it last week. So I reflowed the input pins, all of the caps, Q700, D700, IC2 and IC1. Tried it again, same thing. I could not see any cracks in the h hold pot, however, I tried another remote board (because what the hell, right?). Bingo, all is well in the kingdom. Put the old remote under the microscope and there is a very small hairline crack in it. modessitt, you are the man.
