Here's another monitor I'm working on. It's the wonderful U5000 from Wells Gardner, you know the one that ought to be thrown in the trash :)

Well anyways, I have one that works great, except it snaps sometimes, and then rolls a little bit. Vertically. I did a capkit, and checked all the resistors that the manual said were involved. I swapped the remote board, and checked the pot to make sure it was alright on both sets... I checked the resistors on the remote board, and resoldered most of the vertical section.

Has anybody ever had that happen on this monitor and know a specific thing it could be? I hate these 5000's!

I've had other models do that. Most of the time I find that the flyback has a very tiny crack in it and a little spark jumps out intermittently to interfere with the operation.

Otherwise, turn all the light out and watch it from the pack until you hear the snap again, and see if you can figure out where it is coming from. It's most likely an arcing somewhere, and you just need to find out where...

Yeah, I was hoping it wasn't that, lol. I think I have a U5000 parts board somewhere... problem is though I haven't heard it jump, only seen it jump. I still think you might be right.

I'd inspect the flyback very closely, and if you see any spot that looks like it could be a crack, or a part of metal near the flyback with a burn mark, then take some silicone caulk and put a glob in that area of the flyback. Then see if it happens again. Of course you could just replace the flyback, but that's a good, easy, temporary fix to make sure that's the problem.

I've had several, several, several Sanyo's that jump like this when it's the flyback arcing. So that DID occur to me when this one was doing it, but I didn't hear a spark... this game has a noisy force feedback motor though.

So today I swapped the flyback with one I had laying around. Apparently my replacement flyback was junk too because the screen came up all washed out.... upon closer examination of the original flyback, it has cracks all over it. So i'm sure it's probably the problem. I went ahead and ordered some new ones from Chad.

Hey, can anybody tell me, if I have the same part # flyback on the way, can I just leave the brightner off? It's the big box that attaches to the frame, and runs over to the anode. I'd hate to have to splice that sucker in. This is a driving game, so dont' have to worry about lightguns or anything.

I had one of those on a 7000 I replaced the flyback on. I never re-installed it, no problems. I think it's actually a capacitor, to help reduce sag when the screen flashes for the light guns. In any event, you don't need it.

Just to update for the archive, I got the U5000 flyback in (thanks chad!) popped it in, and now the monitor doesn't jump.

It seeming more and more like if you have a monitor where the vertical is jumping, it's almost always the flyback!
