Two REQUESTS For The CAX Staff

They were looking for space for a few years before they found the Hyatt. Two issues were unions and outside of the San Jose area as that's were the organizers live and have their storage space. The Mascone center would be pretty cool though.
When you exit the Hyatt elevators and turn right instead of left, go by the gift shop and place where the music was on Saturday night, there are some other meeting rooms off to the right. What is the story with those?

If the venue can't be changed, it would be really nice to look in to LIMITING the number of tickets. It was an absolute mad-house in there for the majority of both days.
We should all pitch in next year and rent some vendor space. Instead of selling anything, we will create a "KLOV VIP room" in that space for members and their family/friends only. We will stock it wil our own games that do not have long waits that no one else can play, have a couch(es), and chairs and of course a keg. It will be EPIC!

Will there be a ZP/ICB in there?!?

Hell, just rent a large room, move the beds to one side bring games up the elevator and have a private KLOV bash!

That is dangerous:

Someone in another thread jokingly said you guys have Funspot.

that was me. we already have cax, and i see no reason for a show to accomadate east coast people (no offense to you). half the cali people flew to san jose, just due to the sheer size of the state, not to mention me and everyone else that flew in from other parts of the country. seriously, it's just a plane ticket. the more of these various shows that pop up, the less people are gonna go to cax. you guys already have that philly show, right?

I know last year the CAX organizers were using that as a staging room for some of their gear... It's probably not useable but IIRC there are a bunch more conference type rooms up stairs.... games could easily be brought up through the elevator, power would be something to consider.

Maybe talk to CAX organizers and see if a hospitality suite could be worked out. If enough KLOVrs pay into a fund throughout the year, we could just rent a conference room..... it'd be a lot of work but could be pretty cool.
Not to take anything away from the CAX experience just consider it an annex to the main show. E3 vendors do it all the time, why not KLOV.

Jeff. Does CAX provide it's own power source? If so how does that work? IIRC the Midwest Gaming Classic has this thing called the "Doc Oct Power Supply" that they power their machines with. You guys use something similar? I remember in '09 how the power went out a couple times in certain sections. Was that an issue this year? How are you all handling surges and brown outs and whatnot?

I have a friend that may bring the Electric Mouse Orchestra next year which is a 80's knock off animatronic band. It would be cool to put them in another room with all 80's games and have a side show that feels like an arcade rather than a convension center. CAX #3 was in an old arcade and still the best yet. One of the reasons for having speakers is to thin out the show a bit. This would definately help.

Well you better get cracking. :D

Exactly... CAX grows from local guys that help out and the core group of people that have done it every year. You can't expect to make a request and it'll happen. You've got to take initiative.

I'm not an organizer but I brought games this year and helped out on Friday as much as I could to sort and get organized before I had to take off.

Why not just get a bigger space for the show next year? That way there are more games and more space. I guess there is a gamble involved if revenue does not cover the additional expense. I'm sure this has been discussed. In the old days the arcades were usually packed and you actually had to watch and wait for others to play. I guess most of us are spoiled by our own arcades where there is instant gratification (myself included).

Having a whole other arcade at an event like this seems kind of odd and I'd be surprised if the organizers supported such a move. The whole point of the show is to have all the games together like they were in the old days, and for a random group of people who have little/nothing else in common, to come together. That's what an arcade is really all about.

Guys...thanks for all of the feedback. We definitely are listening and will discuss all of these issues at our post-show meeting we have each year, usually about a month or so after wards to allow us all to exhale a bit :) .

I can add to the space issues discussion in that the hall does indeed have extra space, but it is complicated in that it is not controlled by the hotel but rather the adjacent Convention Center so additional issues would need to be resolved for us to get this space.

However, it may be that the show has expanded sufficiently to justify pursuing this space, and I have it on authority that we intend to look into it to try to make it happen based on our growing attendance and game count, the latter I'm told exceeded 500 apparently! :D So nothing is guaranteed, but the option is being looked into...stand by...

And if we get this space, we'll need to secure enough power for it as well (another issue that must be addressed...gotta have enough juice to keep the games going of course :) ).

Also, the suggestion to possibly move vendors to the adjacent corridor area just outside of the main hall would free up a decent amount of space. We'll talk about that possibility I'm sure as well. I think a lot of other convention-type entities put vendors in separate areas so maybe this would work well...

All good stuff to discuss...anything to make the show that much better.

The power comes from the convention center. There's plenty of power there. Just getting it to the proper areas with the least amount of runs arcoss the walking areas is always a challange.

Yeah, I remember when the power went out in that one section last year. Nothing went out this year, which is a good thing.

The other space is the convension center which is union. This means we can't move our own games once we get to the show and CAX has to pay all those workers to potentially damage our stuff. They are maxed out on hotel space and power.

It depends on the hall/union. I've been involved with setup at another show and the union guys just route power where it's needed and hang things like banners up on the walls. They never really touched the games or were involved in the unloading.
