So I drilled the lock on the Space Invaders cocktail (converted to DK) I bought from SRW on Saturday and found a Galaxian board hacked to play Donkey Kong. The manual calls it Galaxian Kong, while the paper service tag says Big Kong. I assume this is just Crazy Kong. The cabinet looks like it was in a fire, full of black soot:

Here is a video when I made the discovery:

And a short while later after I simple green and washed all the soot off:

I am glad I got both the Cabaret and Cocktail, because the Cabaret is a real Donkey Kong, and I am not sure yet what I am going to do with the Galaxian Kong yet.

What do you guys think?

That is a Galaxian? Every one I have ever seen, or had, was a single board, not a stack. They look a lot like a PAC. On-board power rectification, etc...

or a boot hacked?

Didn't the tag in the first video say something like Taito Space Invaders? It was hard to see.

Craziness. Looks like a bootleg Galaxian to start with. The Midway version is a single board with a satellite for the ROMs. It is very similar to a Pac-Man PCB. I don't have a pic of one but the Pac with give you an idea if you don't already know.

Beat me to it. Argh.

The cabinet was a Space Invaders, but it has a Z80 for a processor so there is no way it could be a Space Invaders which had an 8080. Really have have no clue as to what it was, it doesn't have any name on it.

You would know better than I would, I have never seen a Pac or Galaxian board IRL.

It's like Christmas for you! The presents keep coming, T!

That is if I can get it working! :D

man hunting down all your different posts is like hunting lions in africa around 1920.

it took you this long to drill the lock!?!

definitely fire damage, or it was in a shop where they did lots and lots of grinding but it looks to dark for that.

Haa haa, since this isn't a Donkey Kong I figured I would start a new thread. This was the first chance I got to drill the lock (12 AM) when Hugo wouldn't sleep. Notice him helping me in the photos above?

Good news!

So I replaced the broken capacitor but still no luck:

Then I pulled the board and reseated all the chips and...

I still need to adjust the screen on the monitor, it is turned up way too high! I think that this will be my first monitor I will wash with the hose! Since it is SO sooty!

#winning, you should hold onto this boardset imo. bootleg or not it's cool.

where did you get the replacement cap from? (i was going to recommend taking apart some broken electronics looking for one lol).

Also look at how quick you replaced that cap :D think of how quick you could be hearing "FIGHT" or "FATALITY" or "FINISH HIM!"

I know! I know! I could have fixed that mk sound board a long time ago!

The cap came from a chassis board from a 27 eygo monitor I bought off a member here to fix an extra monitors cause I didn't want to do a cap kit on it. :) when I got the replacement chassis it had big burn mark and obviously didn't work. the irony that I used a cap out of it. the chassis I had worked it just had some minor hourglass distortion.

The thing is even if you scrap something ceramic disc capacitors aren't used much any more.

very true on the use of ceramic disc caps in modern electronics, don't we all have a bunch of broken pre 1988 electronics? come to think of it i think i got rid of most of mine lol :D

MK soundboard GO GO! just do the caps there aren't many, if it still doesn't work put it in the corner for another 6 months :D

Or sell it to me :D Yeah, they're not too common. I've got a bunch of different CK boards, 3 different styles, but no Galaxian or Scramble conversion ones. I do have one of those "Pac-Man on Galaxian hardware" boards though, which is kinda neat. Weird colors and Galaxian type sounds instead of Pac-Man sounds. Sweet discovery anyway, glad you got it working!

That Pac-man on Galaxian sounds really neat too. I never really thought how cool some bootleg boards could be. Interesting.

Yes! The old "coin up, damn you, I'm on video" moment! Very interesting game. Looks like Chutes and Ladders! How the hell is Jumpman going to climb those huge ladders, without getting barreled?!? Good luck with that one!

Believe me, you are VERY lucky if you make it up those! CRAZY KONG indeed!!!

The first stage is the "Pie Factory" followed by the nutz grider stage. I didn't make it up!

hah! I never put 2 and 2 together, I've been watching your Youtube videos for a while! Big Kong looks so awesome! I always love these bootleg DK games!
