"Turn 'em off"

I've seen this question come up many times over the years and i still have to ask why? Higher electric bills, screen burn, potential fire hazzard, exhausting the life out of a 30 year piece of equipment that was exhausted long before you got it and having to spend money to repair something earlier than you would have had to had you left the games off makes no sense at all.

I agree! Like the thread says Turn 'em off.

I hope the Vikings do better next year though.

Everything seems to have been said.

1. Old electronics are huge fire hazards. There is no way I would leave any of my games on while I was away. I too had a flyback go and it was shooting sparks like crazy. I can't imagine what would have happened if I weren't home.

I get enough grief for having games in the house, can you imagine what would happened if I burned my home down? "Sorry honey, I hope you don't mind,. but my love of space invaders just cost us our home and all of our belongings. Love you, kisses."

2. CRT burn and wear. We are always talking about how these things are getting harder and harder to repair, find etc. Why speed up their death

I just had a few monitors rebuilt, chassis overhaul and donor tubes installed. I feel like they should last the life of the game as long as I don't keep them on unnecessarily for hours on end.

One more point, I came across this today while fixing a friend's game. This is a fire waiting to happen.

I've worked in electronics for 20+ years now and i have never and will never believe in the fabel of keeping hardware powered on because it would be better for it.

Simply put: If an electronics device cant handle a normal power off/power on routine it has been a bad desging or has bad components.

This is what happened and happens with PCs. Cheaper is the only goal and quality of componentes went down following this.

Are ther exceptions ? Sure. Our firealarms are running 24/7 and they'd better be:)
There are of course plenty more exceptions where full continious operation is required.

Just for fun have a look at airport departure table monitors or security CRT monitors which have been running 24/7. Just a couple of years and they show terrible burn in.

Our classc games dont require 24/7 use, especially if you properly rebuild PSUs and monitors.

Would you let a classic car running all day because of the same reasons ?

Not only as a safety/wear issue, but think of cost! I can see my electric bill jump higher in the months where I have a get-together on a day where all the games and electronics are on for 8 hours or more. If they were running 24/7 I'd be screwed.
