Sega Turbo, anyone? Like it? Love it? Hate it?

I picked up a Turbo yesterday and I gotta say I am damn excited to get this thing in the basement. Of all the games I picked up lately this one has me pretty jazzed. It's just so different than all of my other games. It has moved to the top of the list of games I need to complete in the garage. I want to play this NOW! The sound in this thing is killer. It has two volumes. One for the HUGE speaker below and one for the up top sound. It's quite an experience sound wise!

Right now it plays blind and I need to get the monitor fixed. I just need to touch up some of the black that has rusted. The LEDs work too, it's cool.

If anyone has a COMPLETE wood shifter knob with the mounting bolts, please let me know!

Questions:

1 - Are the gauges supposed to move? The arrows on them?

2 - Best way to polish up the chrome on the steering wheel? It has some surface rust. Steel wool?

Anyways, do you like Turbo???

Check it out!

Damn, that Turbo is pretty clean. I have one but haven't had a chance to mess with it. The LED's all light up but the board isn't doing anything. I haven't even checked the monitor on it. Mine is the cockpit version.

Awesome.
Looks good, I'm not sure you can ever have too many racing games.

Anything played with an actual wheel and such is always fun.

I don't think the gauges move, but I could be wrong. I like the game, but it doesn't seem to get much love. At an auction a couple years ago, 2 of them went for only $5 a piece, including a working cockpit! I think the upright had some issues, but I can't remember now.

I've got a Turbo cabaret that I'm trying to restore, I have it under the Restoration Showcase thread. If it's like my game the gauges don't do anything except get backlit, look at the needles and if they have philips head screws in the middle then that's the case with yours.

Wow that looks to be in great shape. I played that game alot as a kid. I haven't seen but one local to me. It was trashed so I passed on it. Congrats on a cool game.

yeah, they have phillips screws in them. For some reason I remember the gauges moving when I was younger. Maybe I just imagined it. :)

Yeah, they are backlit.

I have a Turbo Cockpit and I think it's great!

Mine has the LED gauges instead of the manual gauges. Mine could use a new monitor, and the CPO is starting to disintegrate, someone drilled and mounted a credit button on the side next to the coin door, but it's in great shape otherwise.

The cockpit version has 4 volume controls and a subwoofer in the seat. Pretty cool.

My shifter is not the original shifter knob. It's like and airplane shifter with a red button on the side.

I TOO AM LOOKING FOR A SHIFTER KNOB... BUT AFTER BLKDOG7 GETS HIS!!!

The gauges don't move - at least not on my mini and I don't recall them moving BITD. Maybe you were getting 'violent' with the game and the needles moved. ;)

Nice looking machine. I would like to get a 'Turbo' that had been converted to 'Buggy Challenge'.

I played that more than 'Turbo'.

Nice looking machine there.

Gages do not move on Turbo. Only the deluxe sitdown had working gages and they were electronic. Maybe you were thinking Monaco GP? It has a working tachometer.

Looks like yours has the 19" monitor. Mine has the 16" Don't know how rare that makes mine. I have never seen a 16" till I got mine. Enjoy it John, it's a fun game.

I played it a lot in the arcades back in the glory days. I played this a lot more than Pole Position. I never liked Pole Position.

As far as collecting goes, I think the newer driving games are a lot more fun, especially the two player units. If it was me, I'd be looking for those kinds of machines rather than Pole Position or Turbo.

I have not played Turbo in a long time but that is such an interesting cab, no marquee and the leds for the scorekeeping. I passed on a project cabaret a month or so back and now I am thinking that I should go back and check if it is still available.

I love mine.

Looks good, Scott! Odd that yours has a 16" monitor. Mine has a Nanao 20". I wonder why they did two full size cabinets with different monitors. Odd.

We had a working Pole Position 2 and a working Turbo in our game room during our last party and nobody liked the Pole Position. I actually overheard different people saying that Turbo was a lot more fun to play.

I'm not sure other than cost?? Flyers don't give much of a hint either

Japan flyer with the 20" shown.

The manual has both sets of information so I'm guessing it was a less expensive model?

Looks really nice! Have fun playing...

I like the music video "Death Alley Driver" from the early 80's; it has a Turbo cabaret throughout the video. Pretty cool

I totally agree. I have been considering one the two for some time and kept thinking to myself "PP sucks, Turbo is fun and frantic!" The sounds in Turbo are just awesome too, they can't be beat.

Both flyers show the 20"... you can tell because the 16" has SEGA above TURBO... the 20" has SEGA to the left of TURBO...
