What exactly is one looking for when doing a tube swap? How do you know it's compatible with your chassis?

Also what's involved in the process? I assume it's more than just a plug and play swap.

I'm not really scared of getting my hands dirty, and I've worked on monitor chassis before, but this is a new to me experience.

I've got 2 29" monitors with some pretty solid burn, but newly rebuilt boards. I'd like to fix that :)

There are a thousand threads with info and opinions on here on why you should or why you shouldn't. I for one am all about them. Id do a search and start reading up

I'll assume they are in Japanese Candy Cabs since you said 29"?

29" Japanese is 27" US equivalent. We measure the tube size differently but they are the same.

I will tell you that if it is for a candy cab, finding a tube is very difficult. Also the curvature of the tube varies from mfg to mfg and the way that the molded bezels sit against them on a candy also poses a problem. I've seen late model WG 27" monitors put into candies and the bezel doesn't lay flat and has gaps. Doesn't look very clean. Not to mention those WG's suck in that size.

This is exactly the case. JP 29 / US 27. Japan measures the physical tube edge to edge, US just measures the image area.

There's been a 27" Toshiba sitting at my local thrift store for about two years now, and I keep eyeing it. The tube in my cab is a Toshiba as well. I just don't know anything about making sure it's compatible (although I'm now reading the link RedlandMan kindly sent).

The link to the PDF of different CR- codes is dead on that site. But good to know if they're the same neck connector CR code then it's the same pinout.

Ive always done 13 or 19 inch tube swaps so its been pretty easy finding a doner tube. Looks like your is going to require a lot more research and maybe some luck.
