Tube swaps: Different neck lengths and room for convergence rings

I did my first tube swap the other day and it came out great. I used a tube from a Magnavox TV and replaced a Roadblasters burned K7901's tube. I swapped the yoke, and although I couldn't get the convergence 100% perfect, it is close enough that I consider it a complete success.

Today I tried to do a G07, and it was a complete failure. The thing I discovered was that there was not enough room to put the rings where they are supposed to go, because the G07 yoke took up too much space. At first I thought the G07 yoke was longer than the TV yoke, but then I discovered the neck on the TV tube was actually shorter. Looking at the tubes I've pulled out of TVs, there seems to be varying lengths in the necks, and the rings are positioned at different distances from the yoke. A lot of them even have the rings as part of the yoke.

I was wondering if anyone has found a way to use these shorter neck tubes successfully? I was wondering if I could modify the G07 yoke to make room for the rings, by cutting off part of the clamp section. I'd hate to ruin a G07 yoke if it didn't work though.

I know there are differences in gun alignment and there can be incompatibilities when swapping tubes, but I am wondering how much of these problems are really caused by not being able to position the rings properly after swapping yokes?

I'm betting you've got a 100° or a 110° tube, as opposed to a 90°, which is what a G07 needs.

Couple things to keep in mind:

1. Make sure you keep the rings with the tube the rings were originally mounted on

2. the only thing important about the rings is the rings themselves. So any plastic can be cut away, a bracket can be removed, the ring that holds them on you can get rid of, etc. as long as the physical rings are in the right spot on the neck it'lll work. So sometimes you have to cut the rings holder or something if you don't have enough room.

Unfortunately when the rings are attached to the yoke, it also means the tube is designed to have the rings closer to the front. So, I will have to cut the back of the original G07 yoke and lose the ability to clamp it down in order to put the TV rings in the same location. Considering how close the picture looked without the rings at all, I think it will be a good swap in the end. I just need to figure out the best way to keep the yoke from moving on the neck without the screw-clamp thing.
