I'm trying to test out my ROM hack in MAME before burning it, and I obviously don't know what I'm doing. I'm modifying the rom directly with a hex editor (no dis/reassembly) , but as soon as I change something, MAME says "The selected game is missing one or more required ROM or CHD images" when I try to load it. I haven't changed any header information, so I figured MAME would just load it like normal. Maybe a checksum issue?

You sure the filename didn't change when you saved it? It should still load, but it'll complain about checksum errors.

That's what I thought it should do. I just saved it as the same name, but I'll double-check and make sure it didn't stick an extension on there.

Problem solved. My hex editor was making a backup file in the ROM directory, which would have had the correct checksum but the wrong filename. I moved the backup file to a different directory and everything works as it should.
