Trying to get into older cabs (Playchoice/ vs Red Tent)

Im currently in search for a Playchoice 10. I was offered one for $700 w/ 10 games mint condition. Its a single screen & looks almost like a carbon copy Phetishboy cab. I like most of the games that come with it but its a single monitor. Is dual monitor more valued? Are they harder to maintain? Is the guy asking too much?

I also was offered a $500 red tent vs cab(Mario & Excitebike). I think these looks so unique, only problem is space. I dont believe i have ever seen these at the arcades. How much room do you actually need, w/ chairs included on both sides.

Which is the better deal or which would go for...Thanks

the single monitor is the more rare version. I truly have no idea why they even made the dual monitor version. To me it's a waste of a monitor that doesn't even show game play. Value of the machine can be hard to gauge. It would depend on the carts in the game. If they are valuable titles I suppose the value would be higher. I'd imagine most around here would say $700 is too high. Personally if it's in very nice physical condition with good titles I would say it's not an unreasonable price.

I would say the red tent is a good price and generally more sought after. Probably the better deal if you want to make space for it. It probably does not take any more space than a regular cocktail would when set up with two chairs.

Using a bench (piano type) can decrease the space needed with the red tent. That is what I use and it slides under it well. Two small drum stools would also be less space than chairs.

I got mine for free fully populated,my dad found it at a storage place so i wouldnt know. I agree with the dual monitor comment(mines a single)it just shows the instructions. However I wouldnt pay $700 for a PC in any condition.

Both those prices are pretty high, IMHO. Unless both have had some good restoration work done or something.

Just have to figure out what you are looking for. I prefer the single monitor Playchoice as well, since the second monitor is pretty pointless in the dual monitor ones. One thing to remember though is that a Playchoice is just a 200 pound NES with a timer. The games are absolutely identical to the versions on the original Nintendo. The Vs. system (used in the red tent) actually plays a bit different, despite being the same basic hardware. The game code is somewhat different, and the games are usually a bit harder than the NES counterparts. For example, Super Mario Bros has extra holes in the floor, less 1ups, missing warp pipes, and harder jumps to make.

I really want to get both haha but sadly no room. Is there anything i should look for in these type of machines, when i check them out in person?

Very nice.

I was considering selling my Red Tent a few days ago. It's up in Centralia. I decided not to, because it was only to buy something else that I ended up not wanting.

What games are in the PC10?

in enumclaw there is a 200 playchoice cab...

theres a guy in enumclaw with a 2 monitor playchoice 10 that was unfortunately converted to a neo geo 2 slot.

The cab powers up and is 200. Both monitors came on, the top was in test mode of course since theres no signal to it.

PM me

If anyone is interested I can forward his contact info.

I saw that one. He had a bunch of other cabinets as well. I called him right as someone was working out a deal for all but the PC10.

He told me $500 on the phone... but that was for the non-converted unit.

I truly have no idea why they even made the dual monitor version.
Weren't all Dual Monitor PC10's Conversion kits for a "Punch-Out!!!" ?
Pretty sure it's the other way around.

Punchout Came out in 1984. Playchoice 10 didn't come out until 1986.

Looking at the manuals, the dual monitor playchoice 10 came out as both a dedicated cabinet and a punchout conversion kit.

Thanks for clarifying! All the Punchout threads I read give off the impression that people were converting PC10's. Learn something new again. :p

What does the other leg kit look like? Post a picture of that if you don't mind.

That's pretty common on the boards to convert a Dual PC10 to a Punchout due to collector preference. The logic is they may / can have a NES hooked up to their TV and get all the PC10 games cheaper that way.

I for one would rather convert a Punchout to a PC10, since "Tyson's Punchout" is much better than the Arcade one, and you have 9 other user swappable games in addition to that in the same cab. Keep in mind I have 2 PC10s in my collection so I'm a little biased. :)
