Question for the experts.

Just got my Tron Upright - YEAH!!! Love it.

Small problem....

Each time I turn the machine off and then "restart" the cabinet - the high score RESETS
to 2000

Any thoughts?

Thx,

Rob

Dead battery on the power supply board. Bob Roberts has a battery replacement kit. Do it ASAP. Before battery acid leaks all over. If you still have on, that is.

What he said...
Bad battery..

If you blow up yours, I got a sparing coming in that you should be able to talk me out of it for what I paid into it. Just in case.

Don't wait too long to fix it. The battery acid may take down your board and do more damage to your system.

You're looking for this board (but my picture was taken from a Spy Hunter).

The white cylinder on the bottom left corner is the battery on the linear power board. They are prone to leaking and causing damage to the power board. Hopefully someone has already removed it from your board; if not you should remove it ASAP and replace it with wires leading to a cordless phone battery or some other way to preserve the high scores.

Yup!

Mine HAS the "white" cylinder

Anyone got a "how to" replacement guide I can use as place to start with replacement?

THANKS guys!

Love this board

Much appreciated

Yeah, briefly you have a couple of choices. All of them involve getting rid of that battery on the board ASAP.

I'd remove the linear power board and carefully unsolder the battery from it.

Then you have a choice of:

1) Solder a wire to each of the spots you unsoldered the battery from. Run the wires down to the bottom of the cab and hook it up to a 3.6v NiCd cordless phone battery. Wrap battery in a baggy so if it ever leaks it won't go everywhere. I also charge said new cordless phone battery in a cordless phone that I keep around just for this purpose so that when I put the battery in the game it's 100% charged. I also found the matching connector to the one on the cordless phone battery so I can just unplug it in the future to swap it out. This swapping in the future can be done with the game powered up so you don't lose your high scores. Replace cordless phone battery every couple of years. My battery sits in a small plastic bin that I have secured to the side near the bottom of the inside cab wall so it won't move around. This is the simplest and most reliable method in my opinion.

2) Bob Roberts describes on his website how you can replace the onboard battery with a lithium battery. Basically you install a blocking diode so the game doesn't try to charge the non-chargeable battery. You can see his website for details. This works but I've seen some people complain that they lose their scores in a year or so and have to keep replacing these batteries.

3) Replace the RAM that holds the scores/calibration info with an NVRAM -- that way you don't need an external battery. This works really well for some people and not so well for others. I've seen a few people complaining that the scores are lost after a few weeks or a few months and then it'll mostly work again for a while, others report no problems ever.

Lots of threads here discussing these approaches in more detail. You can find them using the search function but feel free to ask more questions to get the details you require.

if you have these stores close here is a cheap option

radio shack battery holder $1
cr2032 battery 3/$1 dollar store

If you don't block the charging with a diode that cr2032 battery is going to go kablooey from the charging.

This is basically the Bob Roberts method described above.

If you have a game that doesn't save high scores, but uses this power supply, is there any issue if you just remove it? Gaplus came with this same style power supply and has a battery on it, but as far as I know, it doesn't save any info (it uses dipswitches for game settings, and doesn't save high scores)

I was glad to see this thread as I've been having some questions here.

For those of you that use the cell phone battery thing, don't you loose your scores whenever the battery runs out? It seems like the NVRAM option would be the way to go, but does this make your board 'unofficial'?

Also, I've got this battery on my Zookeeper board (was once a Qix).

Anybody know if it's going to leak on me? It remembered my scores for a few months after I got it, but it forgets itself pretty regularly now.

Other MCR games like Spy Hunter also save configuration information (like calibration info for steering and gas pedal) in the same RAM. If you just remove it you will lose that calibration info as well.

You don't want that battery on your board regardless unless you want to be repairing acid damage and/or replacing the board. So you need to take it off.

I know nothing about Gaplus so I have no idea of what will be lost w/o the battery there.

The drain on the battery is very low; I've had my SH off for as long as 3 months and never had a problem.

If the battery is failing you should probably remove and replace it.

I have had 90412 powersupplies that have no provision for a battery. I did not know what they were for until I got a Gaplus. It had an origional 90412 without battery provisions. As far as I know that is what they came with. No Battery.

Yes, that's a NiCad battery.....and yes, it'll leak. And it sounds like it's on it's way out.
