Tron Video Monitor

Here is something else I seen, In these pics The tall cap has yellow on its side as if one of the chicklet caps popped or maybe the tall cap itself released from the bottom instead of popping the top. I can not see what voltage or micro farad the caps are, will pull the monitor out this weekend to get a closer look. I think maybe this is the culprit?

Hard to see, but looks like glue used on taller caps to keep them from moving.

BUT - your caps are pretty dusty, and you may need to cap this thing...

Is there a cap kit for sale on this site like the G07? Sure would save a lot of time, than looking and making a list then going to the shack to purchase individually.

The Vision Pro monitor really isn't that old of a device, seems a bit early for needing a full cap kit. The caps in your picture are not damaged, that's just glue used to hold them in place. I don't know if Bob Roberts even carries a kit for this one.

These monitors are *KNOWN* to not work well at all with MCR games.

First I'd try to determine if it really is a problem with the monitor. From the video it's hard to tell, but it looks like the screen is rolling and jumping. If you disconnect the video input and crank up the screen control, can you get a stable grey raster that's not constantly jumping?

You say touching controls on the flyback causes the picture to jump - it shouldn't. Does hitting the side of the cabinet cause the picture to jump too? I think I'd start by pulling the chassis and going over it for cold solder joints, especially around the input header, remote board connection, and the flyback.

Do you have another game you can connect the monitor to?

Normally, I'd agree with you/ However, quality control has gone to shit compared to 30 years ago, and caps no longer last as long as they used to. That VP could be 5+ years old...

I do not have another game to try this monitor on, it is the only one I own. I plan on removing the pcb tomorrow and listing out all the caps with their values. I need more solder wick anyways, need to pick that up as well. But I will look for cold solder joints first also.

Well, I got bored, so I pulled the board. Pin #10 on W301 (Horizontal Synch) appears to have a bad solder joint, it is hard to see it, but a nice ring around the leg and under a magnifying glass you can see it clearly. Looking for others..... I took a generic video just in case there something here one of you may see that may trigger a thought of what could be going wrong. There is also a picture of the crack. And another 2 of fixed solder (I found another and forgot to take a before pic...sorry).

One more Question....I Was to get a Wells Gardner board or any other board for a monitor that is still compatible with MCR II video games, would it hook up perfectly with this monitor?

OK, all I did was resolder solder joints that was bad, hooked the board back up and now it is worse than ever!! UGHHH!!!!!

Here are two videos

1)Game off, Monitor on, turned up the flyback as requested earlier...

2)Game on,Monitor on
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fryx4a8quZ4

The picture was taken when I first turned on the monitor only. I also pushed the button to positive synch from negative and nothing. Seems like color is gone as well and the picture is running left to right at a faster rate. I really need some help here guys or find an affordable board that will work for this monitor, it is a 19 inch.

Are you sure you plugged the video cable in the right way around, and not indexed off a pin? Also, double check at the game board end.

In the first video, was the cable connected to the game, but only the monitor powered, or was the video cable actually disconnected?

-Ian

The monitor was on only, the game video cord was always plugged in in all videos and pictures. I will recheck the connections again.

Should I recap this board or is this something else that is going on? Are there any other 19" monitors F.S. here that is reasonably priced or will a board from another monitor work on this one?
