1. Got 5.0-5.1v at eproms and caps on main pcb. 2. Got 2 new big blues installed 3. It stopped booting abt 3 mos ago after taking longer and longer to boot. 4. Have not cut purple wire. 5. Got 12v on the caps on the linear. 6. Interconnect cables are newer style but abt 5 yrs old.
Now taking suggestions.

Just went out to chk and it booted up! Wonder if it took time to register the higher voltage?

The battery on your power supply has probably screwed up the reset circuit which is just below it on the power supply. So it'll work sometimes and won't sometimes.

You may be right bc this AM I have turned it on and once again i have garbage on the screen. Is it cut purple wire time? This is madness.

Further research online has revealed it could be either due to issues with r201 or c201 on the ps board, or the 74ls161 chip at 9c on the pcb so I'll try looking into those as well. I really don't want to add a switcher in if i don't need to! The 'mcr reset circuit' link at arcadecollecting.com describes my issue to a tee: won't boot, blocks of garbage on the screen.

OK she has booted again but it seems to take abt 1.5 hrs to do it. Once it does it's fine. Weird.

purple wire :) ... if you don't want to cut it, depin it from the plug.

if it resolves the issue, then fix the reset circuit on the psu.

A similar issue started a couple weeks after I bought my TRON. When powered on, it showed the garbage screen for around 5 to 15 minutes after. If left on, it would then reset itself and boot normally. This was before I started attempting repairs myself, so I sent it off to cdjump. If he sees this thread, maybe he can chime in with what he did. I do know that for a few days after I got it back, it still had trouble booting. After that, it booted straight away pretty much every time.

If you cut the purple wire, all you're doing is disabling the reset circuit, which the board has to have. So now it's running the reset line off of your battery on your power supply... bad idea. Just fix the reset circuit and be done with it.

hence why i said to only disconnect it to test, then fix it. if it still has a problem, then its not the reset circuit.

Thanks guys. As long as she is booting again (after a wait) my plan is to rebuild the linear next. Hopefully that resolves the issue.
