So when I purchased my tron it had no sound. He told me he had narrowed it down to one part on the power supply. Instead of fixing power supply I bought a new one from arcadeshop. Installed it and still have no sound. Before new power supply and after I installed I have been getting " sound board interface error " message. Also the three buttons inside coin door...volume...service test switch and credit test button don't work... so I can't run any diagnostics. All wires are connected. Before I rip into it what could the problem be? Is this error a problem with pcb? I have done a little research but fully don't understand what everything means as once again I am a self proclaimed electronic idiot...but I am trying to learn. Thanks

I'm not sure about the inputs... but as with all MCR board sets, start with the basic stuff.

Replace the interconnect cables, check/swap RAM to make sure it's good, reflow pins on all the connectors, and swap the Z80 on the SSIO.

cdjump is your friend.

can't see how that would be a power supply issue.

try searching here for that error as I've seen it discussed multiple times.

Another thing to do is remove the EPROM's, clean the legs and reseat them. This fixed a no sound issue on a Tron board for me recently.

It's possible he genuinely thought so, but was not skilled enough to know.

Yes you probably have some sort of PCB issue. Notice this game is actually a 3-board stack with a rather complex design. The main board runs the game but needs to communicate (across those ribbon cables) to the sound board in order to read switches, generate sounds, etc. When you see the game but "sound board interface error" it's saying that the main CPU is mostly running, at least enough to run the game, but failed to communicate with the sound board.

There are a million possible causes including faulty chips on one of the 3 PCBs, faulty ribbon cables between boards, or bad power supply which you probably eliminated. It depends on exactly what is busted.

My suggestion as you're a self-proclaimed unqualified to work on it (good to know your own limitations!), ship your PCB out to somebody for testing/repair. You likely have a PCB problem and it's likely beyond your skills to fix on your own.

Thanks guys...already talked to cdjump and will prob be sending to him. Twice I have removed roms...and both times have bent the legs ...so I don't even want to touch them any more!

I had the same exact issues. I traced the problem back to the ram chip on the Super Sound I/O located at CP39, Chip # M58725P. I swapped out the chip after removing and verifiying all the ROM chips first and the interconnect Bob Roberts cables.

the cpu on the sound board isn't running correctly, most likely bad ram, then followed by roms. (or dead CPU)
