Hello all!
I have a friend who has a Tron game. When you turn on the game it says Rom 2 error. I see that people in the past are having problems with the ribbon cables. I also see that people have problems with the purple wire. We did hit the red reset switch on the board about 20 times and finaly got the Tron to coin up. we played it for about an hour with no problems. We then turned off the game and it went back to a Rom 2 error. Just wanted to know if this problem has happend in the past? Could the Rom error be from a bad power supply? Or do I need new ribbon cables? And who sells a new rom set for Tron games? Hey all thanks for the time. ANy help would make me a happy man. I love to help out a friend. And that Tron must live again!!!

Tron Battery??

will a Tron game work with out a Battery? I was going to remove it because it is shot. Just wanted to know if it would play without a battery? Is vinager the best thing to clean the board with! Thanks for your time.

yes trron works without a battery, it has therbattery to save nigh scores so untill you replace it you wont have high score save. I ressomend bob roberts $4 battery kit.

Yes if your power supply is weak and or getting ready to fail(lets say the 5 volt output is 4.6 volts) Then you could be getting those rom errors. You could also get those errors due to bad robbon cables or a bad socket and or rom itself.

Vinegar is good to neutralize the corrosion. I dont know why these compahies used ni cad ebatteries right onthe boards, but alas heh...
On mine, it was corroded so bad that the ps didnt work anymore. I actually sandblasted it and then retinned all the affected traces, then installed the bob roberts ps repair kit(about $30) it took me a good 4-5 hours to do all the work but it was worth it in the end.

Thanks Cadillacman!

Very cool! I had found a few things on the ribbon cables. And also the advice you gave me on the Vinegar was also listed so thanks for the help. Yep the cables are on the way. I love that Bob roberts he has all the cool stuff!!!!! When I finish with my friends game I think I will order all the same stuff for mine :) Hey by chance I was going to get the rom in question made. If I'm getting a ROM2 error does anyone know the location of the rom in question. My guess is that it's on the middle board. It has a rom that is numbered I just need the info for 100% sure so I can have the rom made. The location and if the chip has info printed on it would be the best so I know which one to order. Hey all thanks for the help.

I'm PRETTY sure, that ROM2 is on the SSIO board... it's one of the sound roms. A.... 9? A9 I think?... God it's been too long since I've worked on my MCR boards... ... I miss my Tron.

for now!

Just got the cables from BOB R.. He is the man :) Will go out to try and fix the game on Wednesday. If the cables work I will let you all know. Thanks for all the help. If not then I will be looking for that Rom2 that has an error.

do yourself a favor and use some old cap lead or paperclips and your ohmmeter, and verify what rows of pins are connected. I recently chased some i swear were half hooked up the way youd think(top row to top row etc) and half hooked up connected top row on one end and bottom row on the other side

so just fyi make sure you check em BEFORE you put em in to make sure you connect them properly. also they are 1 pin too long side to side so make sure they are all hooked up properly that way too...

also theres two you will have to grind or sand one end so that they clear the pcb support pegs.

sorry for the typos im typing on the wifes new dell mini laptop, this things like a frickin t oy!

I managed to make mine fit without grinding or cutting... it's a tight fit, but they do fit. You just have to turn the PCB spacers juuuuust right and they'll fit, it's a tight fit, but it's a fit.

I did have to original spacers though... maybe they're a little thinner than any replacements you might've used?

Either way, yeah... make sure the cables are connected properly... it's a pain at first, but once you get used to it it just becomes second nature (I've taken my boards apart several times to swap out EPROMs and whatnots).

The connectors latch at either end... if you cut an end, you lose one of the tabs that's holding them together. -IF- you HAVE to cut them, don't bother with superglue or anything like that to make sure the connector stays together, get some of the strongest epoxy you can find and seal that up VERY securely. They'll hold while they sit there without anything keeping them together, but in the future if you ever have to take the boards apart you'll run the risk of pulling the clamped on ends apart, then you could have a mess on your hands. Just try your best to get the connectors to fit in there without cutting or grinding the ends.

rom error again.

Well I did get the New ribbons from Bob. I still have the error on rom2. Now it's time to play with the roms. You all were right the ribbons don't line up like you think they would. They hooked up outside to inside for people in the future. I just hooked them up one at a time. That way I knew when I had it wrong. I cleaned the board and removed the Batt! I think the Power supply is still in good shape. I will have to test it with MM to make sure of the power coming out. If any of you have any more thoughts let me know. I'm in the middle of buying about 6 games right now. The only game he wanted to keep was TRON. I guess it's a good thing I had one:) I just want to get his working. We did get it working one time. I told him that if we turned his game off It might not come back on....I was right. Sooooo at least I know the game will work. Thanks for the help.

MCR ROM error (mine is 05)

Did you ever figure out which ROM your ROM error was referring to? I am getting a ROM error as well, but mine is 05. I was hoping to find a list that maps the ROM numbers to the specific board/location before I pull and checksum all the Eproms.

Thanks,
Dan

Hey dan the pup,
Not sure if I found the right one. I did get a new set of roms for the game. I want to look a little more before I replace any roms. If anyone has a picture or list of the Tron rom setup please feel free to help out :) I will let you know what I can find. Thanks to all.

Tron

Well if a guy just looks at the game page and looks up Tron he can find what he is looking for. Right under my nose. LOL

Tron ROMS

OK, I'll bite. You found the listing of the ROMs on the game page? I have been thru the manual but can't seem to figure out which ROM is which. Was the 02 ROM the second ROM on the CPU board?

Tron roms

Hey when I find out for sure I will let you know! I'm thinking it's on the center board, but I'll get back to you on that. I'm going to do all the roms one by one :)

Tron

Thanks! I guess I am just being lazy here; my error was a ROM 05, so I pulled the 5th rom from the middle board and the board wouldn't fire at all, so I am assuming thats not the one. I hate the shotgun approach, but worse comes to worse I will burn the roms and replace them one at a time just as you are saying. Might be nice to compile the info so we can put together a comprehensive list of which ROMs relate to which error messages.

Tron rom Error2

I know it has taken a while, but this is what I have found. The rom 2 Error was in the stack of roms that go from A to G. They are marked way different in the book. I did try the replace the roms on the center board and had no luck. When we replaced the roms A to G it started right up. May have to work on the picture a little, but I think that was all. Just a bad Rom. I hope this helps. As far as which one is Rom 2 I just replaced them all :)

Hey, Just thought I would let you know what I found. It was not the run of roms that start with 0 and go 0 1 2 3. But it was the run of roms that go from A to G. And not the center board. I think it only had like three roms. Nope it was the A-G that fixed the problem. And I did cut the Purple wire and left it Cut.
Good luck man

I have been searching for an explaination for a rom 05 error on my Tron game. I have searched and only found a shotgun fix. I am trying to pinpoint the error to a particular rom chip, but have not found it yet so I am building a chart to help fix the errors.

If anyone can help me out please post a list if you have it, so in the meantime here are pics of the rom chips location from the manual and name of the rom files. If I need to correct the pic please let me know.

Johnny

It's not intuitive, but that's not a ROM "05" error, it's a ROM "D5" error, which corresponds to the ROM at location (wait for it) D5. There's actually a service bulletin from 1982-09-16 that details the confusion with the font used. You need to be sure to replace the D5 ROM with another D5 ROM of the same ROM revision (6/15, 6/17 or 6/25) otherwise you'll still get the error.
