About 1/2 the time my recognizer motor sounds like it is off balance (yes, like a vibrator). Is this a known problem? How do I fix it?

Known problem.. or more so not a problem, but just the way it is. Half the time you can't hear my motor, the other half it sounds like a dremel going off in the cabinet :) I have 400+ plays on mine and it just varies.

And I have found that the way the ball is thrown varies alot on so many conditions, how clean the pinball is, how clean the rubber spinning disc is, and how much wax/how clean the playfield is. I played the game at an OP's and the backspin and speed the ball was thrown around at was much greater than my waxed, clean game :)

So there is no fix for this?

Through the diagnostic mode, I found it only does it when it spends counter clockwise. Is there a way to make the motor only spin one way? When does it spin CW vs CCW?

So did we figure out what spins exactly? Does the rubber disc move? Is there a magnet disc under the playfield that spins? Something else?

And do we have any official releases explaining the way the TRON disc works?

Hell, I can't even figure out how to get my playfield up high enough to make sure it's mounted tightly. Serious, how the hell do you do it? I can't only get it to stand on those 6" legs. It has to be able to be propped up higher, right?

i know it's a basic skill and i feel like a complete artard for posting this, but:

i gotta have the most trouble in the ultra-verse at lifting playfields and working on shit. i swear, i don't see how people do it so effortlessly. i lift it, then pull on it, then get it completely upright, then wrap a few bungie cords around the playfield and pin head, then go to work. LOL.

i KNOW that's not the preferred method, but again, i ain't the smoothest mofo you'll ever meet. ;)

The game has no magnets per what Borg told me so it's an actual motor under there.

wow. i figured there were magnets under there since i A) heard it wasn't your normal spinning disc and B) have seen that thing do some crazy shit.

so again.........does anybody know what it really is? how it's put together? what parts spin/move and what parts don't?

i'm seriously curious about this.

i swear, it doesn't look like my black rubber thingy moves at all (buh-huh).

A few notes here - that motor drove me a little crazy when i got the machine.

First off - Lifting Stern PFs -

-- First rule - go slow and be careful. Stern resorted to lighter (cheaper?) parts here and it just doesnt feel as solid as Old B/W.
-- Lift PF up by the apron, and slide forward until the slider assembly "hits" the end of the bracket - all of that under the PF, the silver "arms" on both sides.
-- Pop out all four balls.
--Keep the PF centered while doing this, or you will scratch the sides.
-- Make sure the slider assembly is against the bracket before lifting the PF up! I know a guy whose Notch was over one of the brackets - when he lifted up, his PF fell into the cabinet and broke nearly all of the read playfield items.
-- Push the PF up toward the backbox, rest on the head.

The motor.

It varies by machine as to the sound. Sometimes, mine sounds like a jet engine. I see that the louder it gets, the more action i get off it, so i dont mind the sound. The sound is also drowned out by the games music, so i dont mind it as well.

The rubber disc "rests" on the motor shaft, the motor shaft just spins the disc. No magnets, its a pretty "simple" device, and the rubber disc should be completely balanced on the shaft. Any off side motion should be corrected. To check, just pull the PF forward (rest it on rails, or pegs), put the target bank down (via diagnostics mode), and get your hand in there - the disc should be flush with the PF.

When i got my game the disc wasnt wild. It spun, but the ball just wasnt getting any action off it. Heres what i did - and now that thing is AMAzING!

1. Wiped down the disc with a cloth with alcohol - the alcohol cleans and somewhat dries out the rubber, which gives a better grip to the ball.
2. Replaced the back rubber behind the disc with white - white rubber is bouncier and promotes more action off the rubber / onto the disc / disc gets ball faster now and flings it fast.
3. Oiled the disc motor - 3 in one oil, applied to a straw, top and bottom of the shaft, dropped a bit in. This promotes a faster spin.

After 100 plays, it all came together, and by far its the best toy in Pinball.

It's def a motor and been discussed on RGP too, might want to search there as well.

I called Stern, and they are sending out a new motor. I hope the new one is better, otherwise I just going to lube the hell out of it, turn the volume up, and hope it doesn't burn out.
