Tron pin pealing clearcoat under apron? (better pics added, pg2)

Is anyone else having issues with this? One of my friends noticed it Saturday night while I was having a party. He said the ball shot out of the recognizer spinner straight through the flippers, bounced off the metal wall at the very bottom and the came back up (under the flippers). Basically the ball bounced back up after draining. It's obvious that this isn't the first time this has happened too. I'm very concerned about this...

It's kinda hard to see, but it's in the wood colored part, right by the ball drain. Looking down the apron with the glass off. (edit: better pics on page 2)

Huh? The ball can bounce back like that on pinball games all the time? Is that your problem?

Or do you have clearcoat issues?

There is even a name for it:

Lazarus Ball or Bounce Back

I don't care that the ball is bouncing back. I care that it's chipping away the clearcoat on the playfield.

The picture is tough to make out - very grainy.

You say its peeling down there? If so, mylar it before you play anymore to stop the peel and call Stern. There was another member here who contracted Stern regarding PF issue and sadly didnt seem to get far. Worst case scenario is that you mylar that area really well to prevent the issue.

Cant really judge whats going on without a better pic though...

I guess chipping is a better description of what is happening.

I do have some leftover protector material from the flipper/start button protectors, so I'll try to use that, but I'm thinking it won't stick very well since the surface is so rough there

i will look at mine tonight to compare (havent looked back there). If its peeling, i would be concerned. Please let us know how Stern treats this....

The only way that the problem was noticed is that a few little pieces of clear coat were sent flying up past the flippers.

I hope they get the inferior quality issues resolved b4 TF. I was looking at tron. But there have been a ton of quality concerns posted

That sounds like too much clear was applied or perhaps it did not cure long enough. My TSPP has about 5000 games on it and no issues there or anywhere else in the clear. I'm sure they will offer a replacement PF, but it will be blank and you will have to do the swap. If they offer that to you, I would hang the PF on the wall and swap it in 10 years when it really needs it. Good luck.

That does look bad; surprised it would be chipping so much, and so quickly. Opportunity for Cliffy to make a protector, worst-case, but I'd give Stern a call - others may have reported it as well.

I emailed them just now, I guess we will see what they say. If they do send me a new PF, I was going to put some clear nail polish over the area, make my own "cliffy", and hang on to the new PF until it really needs it. I'm not really thinking that is what they will do, but I am thinking that is what they should do. I don't know what to expect. They were very prompt with my noisy recognizer motor warranty swap, so maybe...

Part of the problem is there is no radius on the cut, so it is a straight 90* edge for the ball to slam against.

Here is a different pic. I messed with the brightness & contrast a bit.

Yeah, I wouldn't plan on that happening. People have complaints about previous Stern issues, like pins not booting up unless you perform a "power cycle", and they are still having those issues with Tron. They sold the shit out of Trons, while many prospective buyers knew of the previous issues, so why would they force themselves to up the quality control? I guess they would rather rush a cheaply made product onto the market and deal with the issues us "picky" people find, than to make a high quality product in the first place and prevent the high occurance of problems.

I just got off the phone with Stern. The guy was friendly and helpful, but they had never heard of anyone having this issue before. He was going to talk to a manager to see what they will do about this.

Has anyone else noticed similar damage on their Tron Pro or LE?

Yes, its doing it a little on mine. I put mylar down wherever the ball lands hard including balls drops, shooter lane, around high traffic areas but missed this spot. Also HIGHLY recommend getting kerrys (mantis) protector on the scoop hole right away as it will be chewed up quick. Maybe Kerry or Cliffy will make a protector for the ball return area as well, until then mylar the crap out of it.

Yikes, that seems like considerable damage for such a new game. It can't be good to have little pieces of clear coat and perhaps wood particles getting in/on your playfield..

Where can you buy sheets of mylar? I just used the center piece that was leftover from my start button protector for the short term, but I would like to be able to make my own for certain places...

I like these because you can peel them up an adjust them if needed. These are actually vinyl but work really well:
