Need a bit of help

Tron been acting up lately.....

#1 - Occasionally when the game is 1st turned on the sound would be missing. Generally a simple "restart" would clear this issue and it would be fine for the rest of the day.

#2 - Today it went into "play" mode randomly. Like a "ghost" start. No one was in the game room at the time. Came in and heard sounds were a bit "garbled" so I did a "reset" and it seemed fine for a few minutes.

#3 - Then during the next game - started with sound then "lost" sound about 3 minutes in. Kept playing game without sound....then about 5 minutes into game - game reset itself and rebooted. Came back up without sound.

??

Looking for tips on where to start troubleshooting.

Thanks kindly,

Rob

Thanks for the tip CD

I have worked on Atari Power Supplies in the past, but never a Midway PSU

Assuming the +5 is low at the PCB, what is the next step?

Is there an adjustment to be made at the PCB? Pot?

Or somewhere on the PSU itself?

Thanks again,

Rob

Been working on Tron today

Just booted it up and got this message

"sound board interface error"

Haven't seen that one before

Anyone?

Thx

Rob

The CPU board couldn't talk to the SSIO board. The exact problem could be any number of things.

Have you checked your +5v on the main boardset yet?

If +5v is low then yes, there is an adjustment on the linear power board for +5v but odds are you've got a flaky connector somewhere between the linear power board and the main boardstack.

I have this same problem (low voltage on the main boards) on my spy hunter at the moment but it's intermittent. It's annoying and at some point I'll have to disconnect the wiring harness and spray everything with deoxit and repin the +5 and ground wire connectors everywhere. PITA.

Do you still have the original ribbon cables on the PCBs? If so, I would replace them and see if that clears up the issues. The original ribbon cables on Midway games suck.
