I've got a couple of "noise" questions.

1. My Tron has a bit of "surface noise" hiss, which is independent of volume.

2. Especially noticeable in attract mode, tank firing and disc throwing cause a slight "thump."

Were they like this originally?

Possibly related: when I got the machine, the ground pin had been pulled from the plug. With no ground, metal parts of the machine (like the coin door) were a bit "tingly." So I've definitely got some current leaking somewhere (I'm assuming some dried-out caps).

I'm not sure about the "hiss" you're getting, but the slight thump in attract mode is normal. Mine does this, too; and I remember playing one BITD that did the same thing. I always thought that was strange or maybe some kind of fluke but its not. Why they didn't have full sounds in the attract mode or NO sounds at all is something we'll probably never know.

Mine makes those noises also. At least I know I am not crazy...

mine is quiet as a mouse... i think it has to do with the ATTRACT MODE chip.. i know that there is a chip if you take out, it will make sound in attrcat mode.. I had that noise on my other board before i got the one i have now and that "thump sound" is gone!!!

That hiss is totally normal. The sounds amps on the MCR games output at full volume, the pot controls the audio input level. You could try replacing the caps on the amp board but it probably wont do you much good. Another thing you can try is to put higher impedance 6X9's in the cab. If it has 4 ohm speakers in it now putting 8 ohm speakers in it should cut the hiss a bit. These games were built and designed to go into arcades with LOTS of other noises so it was something that Bally didnt care to work out of the system. That thump is also normal.

If you want attract sound all you have to do is clip a resistor on the SSIO board. But, it gets annoying REALLY fast!

Could always mod the amp board to reduce the gain so they aren't putting out full volume hiss...
