Ok i've had intermittent sound for awhile but now i have none.. some channels got fuzzy and now nothing...

Heres the back story. This cab had been waterlogged bad, bottom foot of cab was replaced. At that time i rebuilt the mcr, replaced the ribbon cables, scotchbrited the fuses and all was happy..

Over time sounds started dissaappearing or having static in them. I found that if i wiggled the connectors at the pcb or at the amp sounds would come and go. SOund bard was reflowed. I basically made a while new shielded harness between the pcb output and input of the amp board.. new wires and connectors. no diff.. also while i was working on this sound issue all of a sudden the graphics got krappy/sprites, pcb started only getting 4 volts. also Lost monitor power..

I fouind that the 3 fuse fuseblock had basically crumbled apart.

I replaced the fuseblock tonight. Reseated all the pcb ribbon cables again tonight.(they are new bob ronerts ones) Powered up.. monitors back, graphics are now error free, but still no sound... none in selftest either. SOmetimes on powerup i get a "sound board interface error", whatever the hell that means..

Have any of you guys been down this horror-path and if so what all did you do to correct your issue? stupid 25 year old wood boxes..... :D

first things i'd check are for +12 at the pcb power supply, and then +15 (give or take) on the audio send and return lines at the amp itself. IIRC, there's a seperate fuse on the power supply board for the +15, so you should probably check that also.
Oh, and make sure you've got the audio connector hooked to the proper connector - there's a 9 pin and a 10 pin on the ssio. You should be hooked to the 9 pin, which is closest to the reset switch.
If none of that helps, its most likely something on the ssio. Also, if you get an sound board interface error, you will not get any sound at all, so if you get that all the time, you need to get that straight as well. Most times, thats either bad ram, bad roms, bad sockets, or bad z-80. I know, not very specific, but it could be any of the above, and thats just to get rid of the ssio interface error.

so basically i need to make friends with someone else who has a working tron and (again) retest all my boards to narrow it down.. yay...

If you're ever down in Nashville you can use my machine.

Swap the RAM from the CPU board and the SSIO board... see if that'll get you anywhere... but there's no way you can have more than 1 machine and not have a stack of those RAMs laying around, so you might not have to swap.

Check the connector that goes from the game stack to the audio amp... make sure that braided ground/shield/whatever wire is connected well at both ends.

check voltages, check interconnect cables, check amp board if you have a spare to swap in. Although if the speakers have hum the amp is probably working. If you have a Z80 around you can try swapping out the Z80 on the sound board as these sometimes fail.

bump to end this thread..

my re-wiring of the audio stuff, allthough scary, was 100% correct. as stated earlier my ps was only pushing 4.1v max.. i finally was able to afford an arcadeshop ps and adapter, put it in and all that ails my tron is gone. videos great, sounds freaking awesome and clear, it never was 100% CLEAR but it is now man.. selftest good all channels check ok the whole shebang-a-bang

id like to figure out what happened with mcr powerboard someday(already been bead blasted clwaned up and bob roberts kit installed when the cab was first re-done) but yeah man shes alive and boy oh boy am i a happy boy!!
