I'm looking into replacing my monitor in my Tron arcade.. I heard that some new monitors don't work all that well with the MCR games... Is there one that you guys would recommend? There's a guy close by me in San Diego who sells new 19" monitors but I'm not sure what brand... Below is a link to his auction..

Not sure if this would work for me but it certainly would be easiest to obtain. Thanks for any help

do some research and you will find problems with those monitors. Don't replace your monitor.

I would look into tube swapping. If you don't have the skills to do it, maybe offer $200 for a zero burn g07 or 4900 tube. Maybe someone will get one/find one/make one for you.

So, what is wrong with those monitors anyway??? Just curious.
So I can avoid similar ones in the future...

It doesn't even say what brand/model number they are so how do you tell if they are crap?
Is there an easy way to tell?

I would hit the local thrift store, find a CR23 tube, and just do a tube swap. As long as your chassis is good a tube swap is pretty easy and there is alot of documentation on how to do it.

The G07 monitor inside works well but it has slight burn in. I have a Pac-Mania with a perfect 19" Nintendo monitor inside... Maybe I can get this new one for Pac-Mania and move the Nintendo monitor into tron.. Is that also a bad idea? Whats wrong with those new monitors anyway?

I tried putting a new Vision Pro monitor into my Spy Hunter instead of fixing up my G07. Big mistake, expensive lesson learned.

Newer monitors seem to be poorly designed and a lot less durable than the venerable older designs like the G07.

if the burn is light, you should bot be able to see it with the tinted plexi in place.

I would hold out for a good tube for the g07.

You are in California, a video hotspot, chances are really good that someone local could give you a good working monitor for $75 - $100 and take your broken one as a trade in. If I can do it in the midwest I am sure someone can do it out there.

I guess I'll chime in with the standard "they don't make crt monitors anymore" so you have to find a good condition used one, or an old TV tube that is compatible for a tube swap, or find someone with a NIB monitor and pay big bucks for it.

Since it's a tron I'm guessing you have burn in from the MCP cone stage. They pretty much all do and when playing it's usually not noticable. If it is you have very bad burn or are missing the tinted plexi that helps minimize the look of the burn.

As for swapping the nintendo style monitor into the tron I'd say don't waste the time. The frame is not correct so that would have to be changed, the input wiring connector is different than the norm so that's an issue. Plus putting another monitor back in your pac mania you would face the same issues. Certainly can be done but it's a huge pain if you ask me.

As for the issues with MCR games and vision pros, I'm not sure I've ever heard of an issue other than with spy hunter and vision pros. Main issue is the strobing water wich is actually part of the game and visible on any monitor but overly noticeable and rather annoying on vision pros. Not sure if tron would have an issue with a vision pro monitor or not.

As mentioned there are a lot of collectors, games and therefore parts in CA so that's helpful.

I would also add that unless the burn is extremely bad I'd leave it.

I can only see it when on the MCP cone game... You can slightly see the burned in letters of the screen that it sits on when you have credits in the machine. You have to be looking for them to notice but still I like my monitors to be 100% . =)

On Spy Hunter I'd get color shifting too at certain points that was fairly disturbing. The colors were never just right; impossible to dial everything in and make it look as good as the G07. The icy roads were kind of a white with a green tinge to it.

And I discovered later that the flashing water is actually tied to the contrast and brightness levels on the picture. I was able to reproduce this on a 4600 or 4900 (don't remember which exactly).

But the gist of all of your points is valid.

If the burn is slight then forget it and just enjoy your game.
