Tron legacy sucked!

Production budget for Tron Legacy was supposedly $170 million.

It's been open a little over a week, worldwide has made over $111 million as of today, and that's not even getting into the merchandise and future DVD/BluRay deals.

I think it will end up being profitable.

Production budget was $170 million and at least $100 million was spent on advertising. So the investment was at least $270 million.

The studio only gets half of the box office so the movie has returned $55.5 million to the studio based on your claim of $111 million worldwide box office. You'd need box office of $540 million worldwide to break even. So, it's very unlikely that it will be profitable, at least theatrically. In fact the loss could exceed $100 million.

DVD sales will be good but DVDs do not sell anywhere near as well as they used to. The toys probably sold okay but I doubt they did really well.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie a lot better than I thought I would.

looking on ebay at the high price for tron arcade games. im betting that as soon as the movie fanfair dies down, after the dvd release and the toys end up in the bargin bin at toys r us the prices will drop back down to a respectable level.funn game i would not mind owning, but not for the prices that the ebay crowd is asking.

And your source for the advertising number is... what?

My claim? I simply quoted the independent figure that was part of the URL I linked... here it is again for you:

They should ask for their money back from whoever did that excruciatingly unconvincing Young Jeff Bridges.

Its kind of ironic that the original movie used analog effects to make people look digital, and the new one used digital effects to try and make a human. Thats rather profound to me, even though results for both were kind of cheesy.

At least the original had some vision to it. Anything in Legacy not lifted directly from the first movie (like the Recognizers and Light Cycles) feels like a SyFy channel ripoff of The Matrix. That bar scene and character is unbearably bad.

TRON Legacy, my two cents...

I'm a huge TRON fan, went to TRON Legacy three times (yes, three). Twice in 2D and once in 3D. It works, who cares what the box office says! Go see it for yourself... you will either like it or you won't (just like every other movie out there). It ties in great with the original film... yes, light cycles and other things were a part of that grid or "universe" so why wouldn't they be in this one? You got newer tanks and a light runner didn't you? It even had one of the original light cycles from the first movie. I mean, come on... if you grew up back in the day (I was even at Disney in '82 when this thing came out, talk about leaving a big impression) you at least had to play the game, then go see the movie (or the other way around). The original was cool then, the sequel is cool now... this is why Kevin Flynn still uses words like "radical" and ends sentences with "man", it was an '80s thing! Just go have fun with it, this is what games and movies are for (IMO)!

I saw it over this weekend and liked it alot. Like ive read here....much better than I thought it was going to be.

Amen, brother!

My 10 year old son and I saw it in 3D a couple hours ago and we both came out saying one thing... "AWESOME!!!". :)

It was way better than I thought it'd be after reading some online opinions... not sure what people were expecting but 2 generations here thought it was great.

Enjoyed it

I thought it would disappoint based on the reviews and opinions here. I enjoyed it. The story was pretty good and the visuals and music were very cool.

I just got back from last night watching it in the IMAX 3D and it rocked! I thought the music and visuals were really good! I took my wife and 13 year old daughter to see it and they enjoyed it also. Compared to the original the effects were top notch! My favorite was the Flynn's arcade scene and Journey seperate ways song blasting on the jukebox and of course the fighting scene's.

I saw it last night with my wife and daughter. We all three LOVED it. Both my ladies pointed out that I had a lot of the games they showed at Flynn's arcade. Cool. My wife also noticed Donkey Kong playing in the background just from sound. Double cool. I didn't think they would like it. Pleasant to find out different!!! I don't think they would have enjoyed it as much if we waited to see it on DVD. Must see in 3D....

That bar scene and character is unbearably bad.

God I cannot agree more... I dragged the wife to see this and I was actually embarassed to be in the theater during that scene.
At least the first movie with some suspension of believability kinda worked in its 'in a computer world' setting.. A main MCP controlling everything in a stark world (it would be wouldn't it?) and exterminating other programs.. but this was ridiculous..
.. exactly what program sits in a stadium cheering over two other programs fighting? What program grabs a paper bag, and sits on a corner being a bum? What program goes to a nightclub and orders a drink and dances? I realize there needs to be a 'world' for a story, and you can say Flynn created it all but give me a break. Why would Flynn need a train or a plane to get anywhere?.. and on and on.. I dunno.. I really wanted to like it.. maybe i'm gett'n old but I tried.. I loved the first one but I just couldn't suspend belief well enough to really enjoy much of this. Only thing worthwhile is the ample 3d butt-shots and soundtrack... save it for a rental.

Count me in the camp that didn't like it. For starters, $43 bucks to take myself and two kids for the 3D Imax presentation, WAS WAY TOO MUCH!

In fact I may never see another commercial 3D movie if theaters are going to provide cheap ass, grimey, scratched, glasses.

Besides a lot of ridiculous aspects of Tron Legacy, some of most glaring are:

1. EVERY character is totally accomplished at operating any piece of equipment, space ship, computer, etc.
2. The Zeus character is a total rip off of David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, and pretty poorly done at that.
3. There just happens to be a "Disk Holder" that the bad guys can use for Jeff Bridges' disk, what great forethought!
4. Even though "The Portal" has only opened twice in history, every character seems to know how long it will stay open, or states, "it's closing soon". How would they know that?
5. The ending flight sequence is out of place in the movie, and poorly done.
6. The whole "Zen" or "Force" use by Bridge's character is idiotic and doesn't even work as a contrast to the regiment of the programming world.

I could go on, but suffice to say, it's going to take a lot more than one scene of Flynn's old arcade to go all nostalgic and say it was anything approaching a decent movie. It sucked and I'm sorry I wasted not only my money, but tainted my love of the franchise.

Jeezus, Jar Jar Binks would have been a step up from that crap. Hey, it's a fantasy movie, I get that, but I expect at least a modicum of cleaver screen writing and sticking to some formal tenets of whatever fantasy world the writers create. Characters just doing whatever, whenever, is stupid.

^ The theater where I saw it provided new 3D glasses in plastic packaging. I'm not sure why your glasses were used. In the link below, Michael Sheen who plays Zuse was actually going for a Bowie Ziggy Stardust/Rocky Horror type character, so I'd say mission accomplished. I thought he was amazing myself, but I can somewhat understand how others would hate the character. http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/2010/jul/25/michael-sheen-tron-david-bowie

not to mention the portal was opened more than once. Flynn was going in and out of the grid.
Actually he spoke about it doing so twice. Usually people who are skeptical to begin with go in to the theatre with a different mindset .
