Tron LE: My observations and tech tips after one week of ownership.
Well,
It has been one week and I REALLY like the LE Tron that I got for my birthday last weekend. Before I even played the FIRST game, I booted it up with the 1.3 update on a USB drive.
First impression: this is probably how the "standard" pro model should have been made, but it's exclusivity means that only a select number of people will be able to experience it this way. Although this does make me feel "special", I am sure that there are a LOT of people out that would have paid "pro" model money for the pin if it was released like this.
Anyhow, after playing for a while, I noticed that it SOUNDED like my right main speaker was distorting whenever bass hits were playing. This was alarming to me, as I had the game playing a LITTLE loud, but not THAT loud. My ears are REALLY sensitive, and after some snooping, I figured out that the noise was actually the glass rattling in the plastic channel in the upper right area of the playfield just in front of the speaker. I slid the glass out and re-inserted it, but the rattle persisted. My fix? I took a long strip of electrical tape and ran it down the edge of the upper half of that side of the glass, folding the edges around so that they stuck to the top and bottom edge of the glass. After sliding the glass back in, it was "tighter" fitting and the rattle was GONE! Of course, the plastic channel keeps the tape in place and it isn't visible once the glass is slid into place...
Another observation is that as the game is played, small amounts of "dust" has become scattered around the play field. Even after wiping it down, small amounts of dust keep popping up. I'm sure this is normal, as Stern is (obviously) not a "dust free" manufacturing environment. AH, the horror of being the original owner of a NIB game!
I also noticed that if you hold down BOTH flipper buttons during the attract mode, it starts a 5 second "countdown" to play the game in a "CHAMPIONSHIP MODE". This is something that I had never heard about before. I've tried it several times, but really couldn't tell what EXACTLY may be different. Anyone???
And finally, if you push one of the flipper buttons while the game has been in the attract mode for a while, you get an interesting voice message. It has only done it to me once, and it said (in Clu's voice) "well, you're a RARE BIRD now, aren't you?", which is what he said in the movie to Quorra, when realizing that she was an "ISO". I find this statement to be quite fitting, given the fact that only 400 of these machines were built. Really cool...
