I've got a TRON stack on my desk right now that absolutely refuses to boot.

It's starting up with a ROM D2 error. This is consistent. I have tried:
1) Pulling the rom and verifying it. It's good.
2) Replacing the socket with a dual wipe
3) Burning a new rom anyway.

No change in behavior.

The bus bars look fine and test fine on connectivity throughout. The ribbon cables also appear to have been replaced previously.

Any ideas?

What version of Tron do you have ?

There are at least 3 different known versions,
identified by a date code on the game roms at D2-D3-D4-D5 etc...

The 3 dates are :

Jun 15 ( 6/15)
Jun 17 ( 6/17)
Jun 25 ( 6/25) [ latest , and most common version ]

All game roms have to be the same version.

[ Note : You must look specifically at the game roms; middle stack D2-D6.
Other roms will have different dates ]

D2 is usually the chip that you would replace for the Free Play version,
so perhaps that chip was changed to a wrong date ?

Do you have any pictures ?

Steph

This one is marked Aug 9.
But I see some other chips marked 6/25. I tried the Freeplay ROM to no avail.
When I put D2 in Rom ident it came up as TRON D2 8/9

I believe the Aug 9 version is a relatively new discovery.

I've provided well over 100 Tron chips and have NEVER seen an Aug 9th version.

Try burning a 6/25 version (normal) .

I did burn the 6/25 Freeplay in, but it didn't work.

Replaced the socket too. No change.

There is no battery in this one. It's just an arcade shop switcher.

That's going to cause you problems, particularly if you try to use the freeplay chip. When the game boots up and detects the corrupt CMOS, it then performs more exhaustive tests and you'll get the D2 ROM error.

Unfortunately it's not my machine and I don't have a spare proper power supply available.

Here are some photos of the roms and boardstack.

I cleaned and burnished the original ROM and reinstalled it. Figure I'll save the freeplay rom for my machine.

Is there any way to prevent this?

I have pulled now every chip off of this boardstack and they all test fine in ROMIDENT.

There is no battery in this one. It's just an arcade shop switcher.

I remember seeing the Arcadeshop switcher board adapter install instructions mentioned something about a "timing circuit" that he had added to the newer adapter boards, and if that wasn't there it could cause problems on bootup. Wonder if he has an older switcher adapter board? @mattosborn would that give D2 errors like this?

I had to put one of those HSS gimmicks on a Tron when I worked in Texas. it's like a total convoluted mess how you have to unfold the boards and run them the opposite way. I was getting sound interface errors and I think I wound up needing to disconnect the violet wire to fix it. it was real weird to figure out cause I'd never done that before and gamefixer was stuck in Fort Worth for a few days. I only mention this cause it was running an Arcadeshop switcher, I'm uncertain how it would've worked with the MCR linear power supply.

I also had to replace several tantalum caps on the SSIO. it ultimately worked and went into a Cidercade somewhere and I never saw it come back. this is the same game where I had to recreate the power supply plugs.
