Helping a friend work on a Tron cabinet tonight. We replaced some fuses to get the lights working, then we started playing and all of the sudden the left and down controls on the joystick don't work.

Any tips on getting this fixed? I know my way around arcade repair a bit and have worked on a dozen or so cabinets, but I've never messed around with a joystick like this and figured I'd ask all you experts before ripping into this thing.

Thanks guys, I am a new poster but I've lurked here for a long time and learned a tremendous amount from this forum.

Sorry, duh. It's down and RIGHT, but I don't think that makes a difference.

I think you should do a few things (maybe you have done some of these already)

unbuckle the control panel and lift it out so you have access to the wiring.

during gameplay touch the metal leaf's together and see if you get any action that you had been missing.

if that doesn't work, make sure your ground wires are there (maybe do this first)

switch the known working directions (one of them anyway) to a non working direction and see if you get any action then. (move the wire going to right over to left, etc)

As tron_guy said, check the connections at the switches. I have seen the soldered wires snap from being under stress at the switch where soldered.

If the connections at the control panel look good, try checking and reseating the J5 connector on the Sound/ Input board. Make sure the pins aren't bent, and are clean.

Thanks guys!

I popped open the control panel and it looked like I just needed to calibrate the leaf switches a little bit. You can move all around just fine now.

This poor game, there's always something going on with it.

The issue now is that the sound seems to be pretty distorted (low notes sound like ass), and the game will glitch out and lock up randomly usually after a few minutes of play.

I'll keep checking the forum for some clues on these issues but if anyone wants to chime in hear I'd appreciate it.

NOTE: There is bare, twisted wiring all over the inside of the cabinet. Also, I swapped out the bad power supply with one I had from a Spy Hunter.

Bare wires are a sign of quality workmanship. Nothing says "I have complete faith in my wiring" like uninsulated wires.

Seriously, though, are the bare wires ground wires running to various ground points?

ugh, I am so over this cab. It's like some ninjas had a fight to the death in there. went to work on it again today and now nothing turns on at all.

If this were the only cab I was working on right now I might put a little more effort into it but I currently have about 6 or 7 machines that need some work.

The last thing that happened was it turned on and showed nothing but this glitchy screen:

So I popped off the back and checked the ribbon cables on the PCB, based on something else I read on this forum. I put the back back on and now I got nothing, no lights, no screen, no sound.

If you have no indications of power to machine at all now check the interlock switches to make sure they are engaged. Should be one inside the top rear door and one inside the bottom rear door. I have seen these not make door contact/get pushed out of the switch frame so no contact and cause the 'no activity' problem you describe.

Yep, I checked those.. They're engaged.

Thanks for all your replies, guys.
