I've owned a nice Tron for 15 years and in the last year or so the audio is completely not working when I turn the machine on. I can make it go through the overall diagnosis mode and it turns it back on. Sometimes it will stay on then and work fine and other times it goes off in the middle of a game. It also used to have popping noises in the speaker when it was on attract mode, making me wonder if there is a setting for audio during attract and it wasn't working properly. Anyhow, any suggestions?

thanks,
Mark

The popping noises during attract are normal (and annoying). If by popping, you mean the quiet popping noise that seems to roughly correspond with Tron shooting discs.

Maybe the main CPU has occasional communication problems with the SSIO (sound) board? MCR games (see FAQ) came with lousy interboard ribbon cables; might be worth replacing, depending what you have now. Also check voltage on the SSIO board in case it's so low that just that board is resetting or dropping out?

Unfortunately that's normal. MCR games have a poorly designed sound circuit, and strange noises as a result of how they did volume control and muting.

Tron audio gone

Ok, I switched the ribbon connectors with the others on the board and resoldered a couple suspecious looking joints and now it's worse...get a SOUND BOARD INTERFACE ERROR when I go through the test screen. I checked the voltage on the main plug and it was good for both 5v and 12v. Any suggestions?

tron audio gone

Also noticed the LED was blinking fast....bad rom?

Tron audio bad

Ok, just reset all the chips on the sound board and it all comes up perfectly now! Hopefully that's all it was, didn't think it would be that simple. Any other suggestions when this happens feel free to post.

I have the same problem with my Tron so I feel your pain on that for sure!! So did that get rid of all your popping noises???
