When I was driving through my neighborhood, I noticed two arcades sitting on the sidewalk. A Tron and a Vs. Excitebike. I asked the guy if he was getting rid of them and he said they were free! I couldn't just let them sit there, so they're in my garage now.

The problem, as some of you can identify, is my wife. She is upset that I would commit to these two machines when we don't have a lot of room and they are not arcades that I ever mentioned wanting to get. I am a new collector and only have two machines, but I am looking for a z-back or preferably a big blue cab for a Super Street Fighter 2, a Donkey Kong, and a Ms. Pacman. She would be okay with any of those because she knows those are the ones I really want.

My question is, do you think I would be able to trade this Tron or Vs. Excitebike as-is (currently non-working) for any of those? I would love to restore them, especially the Tron, but I don't think I can afford to at the moment. Alternatively, do you think it would be better to sell them instead and put that money toward one of the machines I'm looking for? What would the ballpark be for a Tron or Vs. Excitebike?

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Fili

Well it turns out the Vs. Excitebike is in a Bubbles cab. Got it up and running but needs a cap kit, I think

And I turned on the Tron, and this is what happened. Got picture on the screen with just a static pattern. Heard some sizzling coming from the back though, and I could see the anode cup sparking.

Try to fix and flip them. I used to do it all the time and actually just did it with a game a couple of weeks ago. She won't complain as much when you can get a few hundred for the games to then buy the ones you want- without touching the household money for them. Good luck

Pretty much this.
If these are games your not into, either sell them(put the money towards a different game) or use them for trade. Tron even not working might get you a DK, probably worth more than a DK if you get her running.

By the way, that Excitebike looks to be in a Williams cab.
Might be Sinistar, so you might have some really good trade value there as well.

That's a Joust cab.
Joust cabs curve in on the sides below the control panel.

Actually its a Robotron Cab...
I can buy that.
I assumed Sinistar might be a possibility (mainly because its all black) and the shape seems correct.
Out of curiosity, how do you tell the difference between Robotron and Sinistar?
I have a Sinistar and it looks identical.
Are there differences?

Yeah, I didn't notice the depth of the sides. I think the CP might be from Joust still though based on the button layout.

That would be easy to tell if the OP takes the control panel off and looks to see if theres extra holes drilled in it or not. The cab might have a tag on the inside of it still that will tell what it once was. Anyhow, all but one of the buttons and both joysticks look like Nintendo so those have got to be worth a few bucks as well.
I think the OP is well on his way to having some good trade bait or sales material to get a couple games on his list. :)

To answer the OPs question as to value.
I basically look at the two games as three separate items if your going to sell or trade these.

1) A non working Tron I would guess $350-$500 (Assuming the board is there and its missing the back door)

2) A nintendo Excite Bike kit. I.E. Board(assuming its there), marquee, joysticks, buttons. Hell the PPU on the board should be worth good money if its there. I would guess this is all is worth $200-$300

3) A pretty decent looking Willams cab with monitor and whatever else is back there.
This is probably worth a couple hundred bucks as well.

Yet, the wife isn't upset about her giant ass truck that doesn't fit on the driveway in front of the giant house. Lol

Show her the $500 you make selling the cabs that you got for free....no doubt she'll be happy then.

Amazing find! The Tron is something you may want to hold onto if you plan on pursuing this hobby. Very sought after game, and it might be the only chance you ever get to aquire one for a reasonable amount of money.
Excitebike is a really fun game itself, I bet any kids at your house would love it.
Whether you keep them or not, your wife should be pleased to know that you just found $500 or more in the trash!

I definitely say it is not a Robotron. Robotrons have the "swoop" above the control panel. I say it is a Sinistar. Has the deep front and looks like mine.

Joust cabinets are wider than the other williams cabs because joust is a two player game. joust control panels wont fit on a Robotron or sinistar cabinet. But there are some joust's that were put in Robotron cabs from factory if i remember right.

Merry Christmas! Thanks for all your help, everyone. I'm going to be out till tomorrow, but I'll check the control panel and the insides when I get back.

If that Tron is complete and you posted it for sale for $500, it would sell the same day easy. If it works $750+ depending on how bad someone wants it and assuming there isn't anything really screwed up or missing on it that you can't see in the pictures. Side art on it looks really nice. Inner art is pretty good. Just clean it up a bit.

I would first sell the Excitebike and get what you can out of that. Sell the Excitebike stuff and the cabinet separately to make them easier to sell and get more $$$ out of them. Keep the Tron if you can. It's a great centerpiece for a game room and if you ever want one back in the future it's going to cost a fortune.
