Greetings, programs!
If any game deserves to have a full blown reboot its TRON, such a beautiful piece of arcade history.

I want to say thanks to Joe (OU Flight) for the new cabinet.
Darin at Phoenixarcade.com could not have done this without his amazing silk screened art package.
Chris (CDJump), got the boards working flawlessly
Groovy Gamer for the new replacement handle
ArcadeShop for the midway goodies
Twisted Quarter, misc parts
Rich at Thisoldgame.com for the ENCOM marquee and coin door badge

Started with a really trashed TRON that was barely working and had serious cabinet damage, glue everywhere and poorly applied decals. Basically starting from scratch. Only thing left that's original was the wire harness, power supply and the Encom Stuff.

Cabinet and Hardware:
Brand new black melamine cabinet
Stripped and powder coated CP, bolts, brackets
Powder coated and cleaned up coin door with custom logo inserts and LEDs
New T-molding
New Locks
New plastic kick-plate
New Vinyl Casters
New Midway Cabinet Handles
New Midway Metal Speaker Covers
New Buttons
New Controller, restored shaft and parts

Cosmetics:
TRON ART PACKAGE (partial) joystick insert, CPO, spinner decal, shroud art, side art, translight
ENCOM marquee
ENCOM Coin Door Badge
New Reflective silver paper (behind black light over control panel)
Replaced monitor shroud: buffed clear plexi, cleaned, painted plastic (semi-gloss) and installed NOS inside side decals

Electronics:
Cleanup/restored inside guts: power supply, wire harness, PCB, etc.
Replaced PCB
New Speakers
New Marquee Light Fixture/Bulb
New Black Lights
New Power Cord
NOS Vision Pro Monitor

This is known as the Theseus Paradox. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_Theseus
As a dumb-ass, I'm very proud to spring some egghead shit on here. ;)

I mentioned it in his G&G restore thread, but Tron is another game I don't think I have ever seen in non-hammered original condition. They were played to death, the art/plastics faded and broke, and hoodlums couldn't resist carving their initials in the beautiful sides.

I do understand where you're coming from, because I have a couple of games that are in solid original condition and I value the fact that they're survivors. Tron just wasn't the kind of game that'd hold up to a beating like a game with simpler controls, art and painted metal control panels.

Does it actually matter?
1 machine existed before, 1 machine exists now.
Lots of work, time, and money went into this, let him show it off without shitting on the thread!

The machine looks incredible. Theseus's paradox or not, that's a lot of work. I have to assume you included this photo so someone would ask about the missing joystick screw, so I'll ask. How come you're missing a joystick screw on a flawless machine?

I am in the same boat with your other restos, beautiful. What really sux is that you have the same games I do in many cases and mine are in good shape, but clearly mine are truly JV, these are starting varsity all conference... I could care less about the screws and the pedigree et. al , play that sucker...

Good eye! The photos were taken before i found a suitable replacement, the original bolt was bent. I have since replaced it.

I see. The colors on those plastics are phenomenal, and I appreciate the photog skillz too! Great work!

Has anyone ever tried back-lighting the joystick insert? It's screened on the back like it was meant to, or at least allow for it.

Superb Tron

Well that is one hell of a TRON. I wish I had bought a new cab when I redid mine. Mine still has some imperfections but is about 70% original with new sideart, shroud art, CPO overlay, and ENCOM marquee and coin plate. I did keep the original marquee for backup.

Great job on on all your rebuilds. I have a Stargate Mini recreatation which was a Make Trax original and it Runs a JROK board, I also have a Mini Sinistar (also was Make Trax) running a JROK board of those the only original parts for each game were Stargate NOS marquee, and the joystick for Sinistar. Both play flawless like an original and look factory new. I also have a NIB Robo Mini and the other games hold their own next to it. You a lot of work and attention to detail was amazing.

I am assuming board, metal, coin door, plastic shroud, control panel, joystick minus plastic and some wiring are original so it is not 100% scratch built built.

New cabs are saving a lot of trashed video games so there is no harm with these extreme builds.

Michael

Your gameroom has to be breathtaking with all these restored/new games. Just thinking about it has made me step up my game. I've decided to restore my Mario bros conversion into a dkjr. Then tackle the playchoice.

Truly a beautiful cabinet! I can't wait to get mine done.

FizGig... i don't care what anyone Ever says to you...i'm a tron expert...i know everything there is about tron..i had 2 trons in my arcade when i was the senior tech...and all i can say is "even if it's NOT the original cabnet that was made at midway MFG it's an Exact Replacement which qualifies as a properly Restored Game " so anyone who thinks this is wrong needs there brain checked...as far as i'm concerned you have Brought Back a true Legend...a legacy.... so this would be a true TRON legacy :)

you deserve a 5 Stars ... this is a perfect Restoration...PERIOD!

You May Now Go In Peace...Program.

END OF LINE.

Daniel.
