so, my tron is a 4-way game. however, i played another tron today that was 8 way - meaning you could go diagonally. which should this be, and if 8 way is correct, is there something i need to look at in my joystick?

It is both. It is an 8-way stick, but there is a restrictor that makes it harder to hit the diagonals. The light cycles need 4-way, but the others need 8-way (well the tanks don't, but not as important as the light cycles). There is no code to prevent the light cycles from moving diagonally.

My cocktail onlymoved 4 way, and it's a distinct disadvantage.

The game should be played as an 8 way. You need to look at the leaf switches and see if they need to be bent so it can go 8 way.

my best score on my cocktail was about 670,000, and I have got over 1 million on the upright, and quit with guys left.

The cocktail table is 4-way and the upright is 8-way. On the light cycle level a diagonal will produce a step pattern. It is a much harder game with only a 4-way stick. 8-way on all 4 games is optimal.

Adjust the leaf switches so there is a relatively small area where both switches are closed at the same time. But it's a trade off between the "losing control" problem on light cycles and easily being able to go diagonally on the others.

I tried that already on the ct I had and it sucked so had to revert.

i'll adjust them then. the one i played today was such a different game 8-way. definitely prefer that over 4 way. but it does make it touchy during the light cycles. that was something i had to adjust to.

dude, when you start light cycles, you make sure you are either up or sideways, shouldn't be a problem very often.

If I play 1000 light cycle rounds, 1 time diagonal comes into play if I am not careful.

I also agree on having it 8-way. The grid bugs and MCP cone almost require it on the higher levels. One place near my has one that has a sweet joystick that easily hits the diagonals and I've gotten over a million on it twice. Another place has one that is almost impossible to hit the diagonals and I can only manage a couple hundred thousand.

crazykongfan, you and I should make a run at the world record with the new movie coming out and all.

I really have no idea if I can do it, though I think I can. It's just hard to find 3 or 4 hours to practice consecutively. I don't really think I should ever die, it's usually a mental mistake, or cockiness, not difficulty.

edit: and obviously the WR would take 12-15 hours to break, lol.

Heh, it's bad enough playing an hour and a half to get 1 million. I can't imagine playing 12 hours (that's what it should take me by my estimation, although I don't know what grid bug level you get when the level repeats the same one over and over. If it doesn't ever generate a "bit", that'll slow down scoring a little). I agree about making mental mistakes too. That's what usually gets me. Going the wrong way on a cone or moving up to quickly on a tank and getting shot. The only ones that sometimes get me when it's not my fault is grid bugs. Once in awhile, they just multiply too quickly and I get trapped.
