Tricking out the new Multi-Williams Control Panels!

Well its been a long day. Tree is finally up, although not decorated, just the lights. I have been working on some Christmas gifts for all the kids.

Last but not least I have been trying to get my Multi-Williams control panel all set up.

After a few coats of primer the overlay when on very smooth. I freak out about putting these on because I am scared I will hose them. This is my second and it turned out wonderful. The first one I did was a Stargate from arcadeshop that cracked up on me a little from bending it too much I guess.

Anyway I was sitting here wondering why the hell my leaf style buttons wont fit the brand new control panel? I have some micros that just barely fit and you can here them pop when you snap them in. Im like honey did I just crack that damn button? err...

Well this is certainly un expected so what the hell can I do? I noticed another guy in the for sale thread ask this question. Do I need to ream these button holes out and with what? What about my brand new overlay will it get messed up in the process?

Leafs will work BUT in your case no.
See this thread post #3 last picture:

I hate cherry switches and in order to used leafs I had a buddy of mine custom make this CP for me. While I wasn't a huge fan of the front edge being a 90 degree bend, I learned to love it.

Leafs are the only way to fly - but in your case the original CP doesn't allow enough room to fit leafs. You'll also most likely run into the issue where the left side joystick will butt up against the bezel support piece causing the CP not to fully close. You'll need to cut off about 1/2" of the wooden bezel support piece.

I had an different metal control panel that was said to have come from Arcadeshop (I got it second hand as part of a pile of parts I bought). In order to populate it using leaf switches, I had to use the white plastic spacers and to be able to fit the buttons in, I needed to use a round file to enlarge the holes slightly. By only applying pressure on the down stroke (with the overlay on the top) I managed to fix the holes without mangling the overlay.

Edit: It looks like somebody raided the Walgreens (Genesis game systems :))

Ahhh yes I see it now - it is metal not the wooden CP sorry. I do know using the original wooden cp is a no go for leafs :(

I didn't much care for the arcadeshop CP's layout and for that matter their artwork.

Been hoping Rikitiki would come out with a new non mustard ketchup nightmare color scheme.

I have a wood cp,that used to be a Stargate cp,and I have leaf switches on my buttons.
I used long buttons with leaf switch holders.
You just have to lay them out so they all fit nicely.
Williams used leafs on the cp's,only they used short buttons and mounted the leafs directly to the cp.

Did you see the pictures I posted? lol

I didn't have any problems with the wood control panels and leafs. They leafs fit fine as you can see in the picture.

Just use a demel to sand down the shoulder of the buttons till they fit.

Jim I think I will try the dremel first. I have tons of buttons I can screw up but only one panel/overlay.

Just remember that there is about an 1/8 of an inch bezel on the buttons, so you can screw up that much of the overlay and have the buttons cover it up.

Thanks for the posts...

What about the dust washers? The wicos mount off of the panel so no real way to use them underneath the cp.

Anyone have a support bracket or two they like to sell?

There was some pictures where someone used wood blocks. I think the pics are t the end of the panel preorder thread.

Yea I seen the wood blocks and was wondering if there were any other ideas.

+1. I did this last night and it only took me about 30 minutes to do all of them. You just have to be careful not to nick the button bezel. As a bonus, no PAL nuts are needed.

I was thinking of taking the base and dust cover from a shitty joystick, drill out the holes a little larger so it slides over the four posts then put a spacer on each post flush with the top of each post so when I mount the joystick it will keep the cut base and dust washer in place. Make any sense???

Kinda like the wood block, but with a cut up joystick base.
