Transporting Large games over distances- Where to rent trucks?

I'm looking at transporting a large sit-down game from Detroit to Tampa, and was wondering what you guys do for Truck rentals on games like this? I have thought about NAVL, but don't know if they can handle my game with the due care that I would want it handled, after all this is a rare game and the artwork is perfect. Most of my NAVL experiences have been good, but this machine isn't just a "put it on a dolly and go" kind of machine.

Since I have family in Detroit it would be easy to fly up there, visit for a while, then rent a truck and drive back.. I'm just afraid of what the expenses would be with gas and everything.

Do you guys use uhaul, ryder, or who would you suggest? Just looking for ideas to get this thing moved safely...

I don't think ryder does one-way rentals. You might be stuck with uhaul (which is a bummer, cause the ryder trucks have lift gates!)

Rare Game...fly...rent truck...gas....oh, the memories.

If you do not think NAVL can handle it, which it is their business to do so, I would suggest a Budget truck. They can come equipped with a lift gate.

I'd calculate about a $1 a mile with rental and gas, though gas prices are higher now. Maybe a $1.25 a mile?

By the time you factor in a plane ticket too...it gets expensive.

Personally, I only did this with one game outside of the Cali, AZ, NV area. Those I just did myself in a pickup.

Good luck, hope it helps you out!
BTW - What game?

Gotta luv this hobby! Who in their right mind would fly somewhere just so they could rent a truck, pick up a game, and drive over a thousand miles back home!

With that being said, I'd do it if I really wanted the game! :beerchug:

Another plus for U-haul is they have a lot of nationwide support so if you happen to break down, they should have a replacement truck close by(or at least semi-close by).

I've rented Budget trucks when I needed to do something like this - their prices and trucks I've found to be better overall than Uhaul.

The only problem is that most rental services won't rent liftgate trucks for one way rentals. Which was fun for me, because I wasn't picking up arcade machines, I was picking up very heavy mainframe computer equipment...

But, while the liftgate is nice to have, the ramps on those trucks usually work just fine.

Or drive 24hrs RT to pick up a game... who in their right mind would do that! :D

At $1/mile for a 1200 mile trip + plane fare, you should be able to crate the thing up and ship it for 1/2 that!

I have shipped some big stuff you might look at these guys as a option ,fly up visit the family Crate it yourself so you know its done right, then pick your shipping source and buzz home.

their is a Co. called Forward Air, http://www.forwardair.com/ they are dirt cheap for what they do, they run Hub to Hub in most major cities so you pickup/drop-off at a warehouse, I have shipped motors, motorcycles all over the country and received from them never a problem, they also have Insurance you can buy on the value. and if you ship on the same coast most of the time the item is moved in 3 days.

last piece of advice on shipping, lose the pallets that lay around..they are fricken heavy!! and your paying for that!, I build my own pallets 2x4's and a sheet of plywood will carry what ever you need to move and weigh 1/4 of some old knarly pallet.

Khabbi.... If you have the time and money, take the road trip, it's fun. I did a fun trek from CA to GA to CA for mainly one game but it turned into a mission picking up / dropping off games for other KLOVrs. That just made it even more fun.

Budget is a great brand with lift gates but when I did my trip back in 2008, they didn't offer one way. I ended up not having a lift gate and therefore it was a little more tricky but the ramp worked fine.

Here's the thread from 2008 of the trip. Full details and post wrap up with pics link are on page 10.
