I just saw this on newark's site. Wouldn't this be a good idea for the hot running color vectors like WG6100? Or is it just overkill? I know when it comes to color vectors, people like to go all out. =)

1st the link works

2nd I think when I first saw these thing they were quiet costly. I think 3.63 is a lot more reasonable priced.

3rd even tho the transistor Dye is on bottom of the bottlecap adding a little extra cooling on the top might keeps thing running cooler.

4th While we do have modern version of 6100 and amp. I believe we don't have one for sega.

These might fit but I don't know about space issues. A temperature test with a before and after would determine if this would give you any extra cooling.

Time to add this project to the que and see if it works.
Perhaps just better Transistors is the way to go with the sega system perhaps a remote system with a few Cpu Computer fans is a better route to go.
 
6100 transistors already have very good heatsinks, i.e., the big metal frame that they're connected to.

The problem is that the frame can only sink so much heat. Then it needs to radiate it into the air, via convection. But that's slow.

However the simple way to improve that greatly is to add an exhaust fan at the top of the cab, to draw more cool air in through the bottom of the cab, and over the entire frame. That will pull far more heat off of the frame (and everything else in the cab), into the air, and keep everything cooler.

The more you can blow up and out the top of the cab, the cooler everything inside will be. There's no need to add additional heatsinks to the transistors (and they won't work anywhere near as well as moving more air over the heatsinks that are already there).
 
The Sega Star Trek game already has a fan built into the upper backdoor with a 120 volt fan.

The Sega monitor still generates a lot of heat. The sheet metal heatsink works for the 6100 design. The Fred version of the 6100 uses more efficient transistors and a nice large heat sink.

Having more metal surface area to radiate in theory should work and having a fan to keep it cooler works should work even better. The problem with DC fans is that they tend to stall and die. I deal with over 500 arcade machines and I do buy fans by the case laughs. I supect that I going to need more due to the 400 other machines that need to be repaired.

Time to experiment to see if adding these heat sink will improve the performance of these transistors. Orginal vs more fins vs fins and fan.

Opinions are great but I rather experiment and see what kind of results I will get.
 
Now to find the contact less temp probe and some vector momitor to work on it..
