Does anyone play certain games to help them with others?? For instance, playing some shoot em ups that have a lot going on will help you with coordination and reflexes right? So does anyone think that would help you get one step further in say donkey kong (dodging slower barrels compared to fast bullets)? I feel like playing the same game over and over will help but its minimal compared to a different level of gameplay. Sort of like when your on the highway for an hour driving 80 then you slow down to a 30mph town and you feel like your not moving.

I think this is true of shooters. I know playing some of the psycho speed Japanese shooters made me better at Xevious, even though I was already pretty good at it.

If you have a MAME setup, you can use Save States to practice higher levels of the game you want to get better at. Just keep playing through and saving until you reach a spot you need to work on, like level 3 elevators in DK.

That way you can kind of get over the "panic factor" when you get to a new plateau on a dedicated machine. I know I always screw up a few times when I try something really new and difficult. It sucks going through a whole game multiple times to overcome that.
Its certainly a major cheat, and I think it has much to do with us now seeing many people able to do million+ games of Donkey Kong and perfect games of Pac Man.

Yea savestates help me out with some stuff, and I definitly know what you mean about trying something new on a dedicated machine, sucks when you have to go back and do it all again. Ghouls and Ghosts, perfect example of panic factor when you get some where new haha. I still can not make it to level 3.

The good thing about emulators is you can up the speed.

I used to play Excite bike on 2x speed....

Made a normal run through much easier.
