Tragedy Strikes - 720 cabinet rebuild

I wonder if phoenixarcade changed how they print the boombox? @darinjacobs It seems like I've noticed a lot of the boomboxes showing light where they shouldn't, and from memory I thought there was an extra layer of silver or something printed to block that. Maybe some modern bulbs are just crazy bright?

Clearly some things have changed over the years because my sideart had premask and I think was individually cut to shape instead of left on a larger sheet. Maybe others reported issues tearing the art when removing the premask like that issue I had, so they dropped the premask.

I'm not sure, but it IS a bright light! I didn't have it completely assembled when I powered it up the first time (boombox panel, front glass, etc) and from behind the machine I could tell that the bulb lit up the whole basement! I'm debating finding another to test it out w/something less bright.
Don't move it again LOL

You're not kidding. I didn't even really want to roll it the 15' to the other side of the basement, to get it to it's final spot!

My boombox art came from TOG and had the same issue with the light showing the whole cut out area. Try looking for a very low powered LED bulb. Can't remember what I ended up using, but it worked.

I'd expect that problem on a digital print, because it doesn't that the silver light blocking ink. The screenprinted versions should have a true silver boombox (not grey) and from what I've seen in the past, aren't as susceptible to the bleed problem.

Interesting, I don't know why mine has it then? I got it from Phoenix Arcade, and I thought theirs were "screenprinted versions... (with) true silver boombox"?

I had been assuming that it was because the LED that mine had been replace with was just beyond expected spec for the boombox overlay?

I understand it to be screen printed too.

The LED lamp is going to be WAY to bright. OEM spec is 25w incandescent.

That was in reference to the TOG version,
and other 3rd party on-demand prints that don't block the light well, not Phoenix's screenprinted version. Since yours is from Phoenix, it's probably just that crazy high brightness bulb that's in there right now. 😄

How it should look - with screenprinted overlay - straight forward shot.

How it looks with printed on demand versions - side angle shot.

I finally got around to replacing the bulb tonight, I'm not sure it completely solved the problem. I replaced the initial bulb with a 15W comparable LED.

Here's the difference in the bulbs themselves:

The difference with the boombox installed:

Better, but still a bit noticeable.

There is a 720 restoration thread where they actually masked off an painted the plexi behind it. They were not sure if it was masked from the factory or not.
Can't find the thread right now but these are the pics I pulled:

During the search I found these:

Backlit using incandescent. Not sure wattage:

Same, notes vinyl from TOG but not specific about boom box overlay

FYI: OEM speaker shown here:

Yeah, I saw that thread when doing my homework, but IIRC it was commented that wasn't necessary if using "the right" artwork?
