Track ball opti boards help

Testing a batch of track balls and I find that I have a failure rate in the opto boards over 50%, which really surprised me because those little boards really don't have much too them. If you have the original Atari one's, about all you have is the opto itself. If you have the Wico remake of them there is an IC on the board too. Do the opto's really have that high of a failure rate? Anyone know of a source of replacements for the opto's or is it cheaper to just get a whole new board? Or can the opto's themselves be repaired? I haven't tried cleaning them, but it seems like it's a spot where dirt could build up inside of it to make it non-functional.

Anyhow, any repair or replacement tips you have would be appreciated. Thanks,
