Totally Dead Major Havoc / Tempest Conversion Board

I have a Major Havoc / Tempest conversion game board that is totally dead. When I install it in a fully working Tempest cab the spot killer comes on on the monitor, no player 1 / 2 lights, no sound other than an inconsistent background motor boat idle type sound, nothing. When I fire it up in test mode it does the same thing. This is totally dead. Any thoughts on where to start with this?

Thanks

I don't know a lot about vector games but I'd start with the usual checks.

- Is /RESET line behaving as expected?

- Is CPU receiving a proper clock signal?

- Do the ROMs contain correct code?

Well I have no clue. Once I figure out how to check that stuff I will report back. Was hoping there may be some common failures that I could go after. Probably not that simple though.

I don't have a major havok and never have had one but just to clarify is there an adapter for the pin out when you put the board in a tempest machine? From other posts I've read i believe there is or should be but I may be wrong.

Assuming that the pin out is correct and the board is of course plugged in correctly then my next guess would be that your MH board has an issue. If you say that the tempest is fully working then I must assume the issue is the board.

Once again I don't know much about these but taking the educated stab in the dark I might determine which chips on the board are the X and Y outputs. I know for fact that I had a dead tempest board that simply didn't work due to one of these chips going bad. I think they are cheap so you wouldn't be out much replacing them. Beyond this I have nothing.

5.06 volts.

Thanks for taking time to brainstorm.

No one has mentioned this but the smaller harness connector needs to be flipped 180 degrees when connected to the MH/TEMPEST conversion board. If you don't you will have no sounds and you will not be able to start a game. This information can be found in the MH/TEMPEST conversion manual. You will probably have to cut a couple of connector ties to be able to flip that connector. The top larger connector stays the same..DO NOT FLIP THAT ONE !

Playing Blind Now!

Okay, after flipping over the harness it plays blind! Hopefully this makes it easier to figure out. I am going to do some research but any other suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks!

check your +-15 +6.8 +5 dac

Then check your AC volts on X and Y out. Should be around 3 +-1vac it will bounce if you are not in test mode this is normal.

If one or both x and y are zero, or higher than 5vac your analog section is dead.
You will then need a scope to figure out which section is dead.

You can start troubleshooting the analog section by measuring the DC voltage on pin 18 on both of the am6012 chips they should read very close to zero .002

Then you can try to measure the voltages on pin 7 then pin 1 of the TL082's Not sure off hand what to expect as I use a scope. But I'm thinking it will be a couple volts. increasing when you read pin 1.
