Looking for Torx Security /screwdriver/. I've got a ton of bits, but I'm trying to open something with extremely recessed screws, and my bit driver won't fit inside.

Something that can be picked up locally at a B&M would be ideal.

I have seen Torx screwdriver sets at Auto Zone and NAPA. Try calling around to auto parts stores or checking their inventory online.

I've not personally seen a security torx screwdriver - only bits. But, what I have done in the past is to use a small flat blade screwdriver, wedge it into the space in the screw head (between the post and the side wall), and break out the center post. An appropriately sized drill bit turned in a hand drill will do the same thing. It's really not that hard to do, suprisingly. Then use the regular torx driver to remove the screw.

Another trick when a bit driver won't fit is to wedge a driver bit into a BIC pen barrel. It's suprisingly usable as a screwdriver that way.

I bought my sets at harbor freight. Cheap with a huge selection in the kit. My bad, thought you wanted to find a set of bits. I drill hole thru center of screw and it usually loosens or breaks. Either way it comes out :)

2 things you can do:

1. Braze or weld the bit to a T handle or screwdriver that you cut the tip off of.

2. Drill a hole in the center of the bit, or, cut a slot across the face of the bit to accomodate the security shaft.

I've done both and either one works just as well as the other.

Looks like just regular Torx, not security - at least on their site.

Yes, after writing that I remembered that I have seen both sets. I think the security set was at a local parts jobber. Do you have a NAPA or an independent auto parts store nearby?

I would have broken out the center nib already, but they are /really/ recessed. I don't want to screw it up and not be able to remove the screws after that.

Good idea with welding/brazing onto an existing screwdriver handle - IF I had a welder. :(

I'll give local car parts shops a call, maybe I'll get lucky.

If the bit itself will fit in the hole, but not a BIC pen barrel or holder around the outside... You could try cutting a slot in the BACK of the bit with a dremel tool, then using a magnatized flat blade screwdriver to turn the bit in the hole.

Now that's not a bad idea.

Dogonne it...the Bic pen WOULD work...if the damn hole didn't taper down near the screw. If I sand it down, it would probably get clearance, but then the plastic would be too weak. Maybe. I'll try it first before I say "nope!"

I've got a couple allen wrenches that are Torx security on one end. I usually use them to remove the Midway marquee bracket screws when they seem welded on on and the bit doesn't want to seem to grab....

i got torx security drivers at home depot.. it is in a kit with the screwdriver and interchangeable bits which store inside the handle.. cost about $10

I have seen many torx sets in most major home improvement places. However I have not seen torx SECURITY sets in any public store. I dont know if it is true or not, but I had 3 different hardware store owners tell me that they've been trying to get their hands on them for years but by law they cant sell them to the general public. One of them said it's like being a locksmith and having a license or registration to carry a "master key". I think it's total B.S. but in NY I not surprised by much anymore. I did find a nice set on ebay though.
