Top 25 Vectors

Interesting list.

How could AD possibly be #24? That's the definition of insanity in my world.

My top 5 would be :

1) Gravitar
2) Asteroids Deluxe
3) Black Widow
4) Space Duel
5) tie between Armor Attack and Rip Off (see how I snuck a 6th pick in there. ;))

I know, I know ... no Tempest in my list .... it's because I suck at it.

What's your top 5 list look like?
There is currently a working Sega Tac Scan for sale on EBay

My two cents:

1 - Tempest
2 - Major Havoc
3 - Black Widow
4 - Gravitar
5 - Star Wars
6 - Tac Scan
7 - Battle Zone
8 - Space Fury
9 - Star Castle
10 - Space Duel

I get the impression I would like Top Gunner if I played it with actual controls, and I'd love to try Vertigo if the ROMs ever turn up.

I really like Lunar Lander also. I need to finish restoring my real one. I'd also love to figure out a way to sync the landing to a physical model because I think that would be hilarious.

Apart from a nostalgia string plucked by a few older b&w games a sadly large proportion of those are pretty uninspiring these days.

Of course THAT said, that particular glow of a real Asteroids is hard to beat, Omega Race is fun and Lunar Lander gets pretty challenging and there are a LOT of the color vectors that are really fun to play and visually are quite stunning.

It's sad there are so few of certain titles (I'm looking at YOU Sega, Vectorbeam/Cinematronics vectors) since I'm sure many other people would feel the same as a few of us if only they had played them.

Thanks to those in the repro community for making that possible for me at least!
I'll buy you a beer if I catch you somewhere or mix you a MaiTai if you come out here sometime.

And much thanks to those doing restoration and repair work also.
Those of you carrying the ball for a few decades now kept the dream alive for those who have more recently been making it so that a MUCH larger number of people can enjoy these games properly in the modern day.
It's all pretty astounding work.

-and Tennis For Two deserves more love.

Though I don't sell any of my games, I do have multiple same-type vector cabinets in the collection at present ->

QTY 5 Gravitar cabinets (my fav)
- Gravitar (w/ Grav art)
- Black Widow (w/ Grav art)(one day I might put BW art over it to be like factory)
- MH conversion (w/ Grav art)
- Zektor ZVG muligame (w/ Grav art)
- Gravitar (gutted needing restoration - not sure if to restore or make it into a Quantum or another vector multigame) (presently w/ Grav art)

QTY 3 BattleZone cabinets (no holes)
- Battlezone (in the arcade)
- Battlezone #1 (gutted needing restoration)
- Battlezone #2 (gutted needing restoration)

eBay prices be like that. Just a couple weeks ago, someone blew three thousand dollars on two Atari pins on eBay. Hope whoever got it really likes Tac/Scan.

For whatever reason (rarity?) Tac/Scan seems to be a rival for Zektor cabinets.
Almost everyone, who appreciates vectors, seems to have Tac/Scan on their want-to-buy list.
It is a cool game though ... Tuckey approved "nightmare system with no warranty". :)

Fortunately for us poor folks, we can simply purchase a ST SOS (convert-a-cab) and put in the VL mulitgame w/ screen orientation PCB and be satisfied.

I think Tac/Scan is a fantastic game. One of my favorites. I ain't paying anything close to that for one, though...

In Todd's vid he claims he sold the game for $300 in 1988.
And in 2014, was asking $1699 (no warranty) for it.
Someone else snagged one in 1983 for $150. Which sounds about right. Those were the days.
Now in 2025, we're looking at $3000+ for one?
Crazy. :)

This thread piqued my interest. Evaluate the vectors and rank them. I took the challenge but only with the games that I own or have owned. This was harder than I thought. It was the middle that stumped me.
The few at the bottom were no brainers.
Top 10 took some thought. Still not 100% happy.

That darn middle. Those 15 or so I would lump together as decent but not great. (* = color)

1 Rip Off
2 Asteroids
3 Tempest*
4 Quantum*
5 Battlezone
6 Star Wars*
7 Major Havoc*
8 Demon
9 Cosmic Chasm*
10 Aztarac*
11 Star Trek*
12 Omega Race
13 Eliminator 4P*
14 Red Baron
15 Star Castle
16 Zektor*
17 Armor... Attack!
18 Asteroids Deluxe
19 Black Widow*
20 Eliminator*
21 Gravitar*
22 Tac/Scan*
23 Space Duel*
24 Space Fury*
25 Boxing Bugs*
26 Lunar Lander
27 Speed Freak
28 Tailgunner
29 Warrior
30 War of the Worlds

The rest. I've played most but not enough to track one down
Barrier - BAD
Empire Strikes Back, The* - DECENT
Scramble (Vectorbeam) NEVER SEEN ONE
Solar Quest - BAD
Space War(s) - OK
Star Hawk - BAD
Sundance - BAD
