Although I agree that this is a nice list and I agree that the initial list may have some more modern stuff that I don't agree on I will say that not all the games should be Golden Age type games. That just sorta leads to the the idea of being stuck in the past. There are some great games from both eras. You really would have to dig deep and give some serious thought to alot of games out there. Not just Golden Age and not just 90's games. Really look at what changed gaming and what really cought peoples attention. I absolutely hate Dance Dance Revolution but you have to admit that this silly game got some serious attention from the newer generation of gamers. I've seen arcades where no other game was being played and there were just crowds of people around this thing. I even remember Malls having tournaments and crap. When in the last 10 years have you seen any other game draw that much attention.

This list is just one persons opinions. I don't think anyone could ever come up with a list that would be agreed upon by everyone. Just too many great games out there.

I agree with you 100%. And yes, I hate DDR, but feel it revived a relatively stagnant industry at the time, forcing game makers to again rethink what makes a game innovative and fresh.

How old are you??

Many of the golden era games drew big crowds. People who were not there can only speculate.

DDR changed gaming, and got people attention??? Try Asteroids bro caused a quarter shortage in the USA, and it misses the list??? LMAO!!!

I'm 35, so I am a bit young for the late 70's but I firmly remember the 80's quite well. I would have to say that probably 60 or 70 percent of the games on the list should be of the Golden age. But there are a couple newer ones that turned some heads that we just don't think about cause we are older now. When you consider that DDR had to compete with the modern consoles where the Golden Age really didn't then it actually did pretty damn good to get kids off thier playstations and xbox's. Golden age games never had as much competition from the home systems. Arcade games back then were always so much better then console. Not the case now. Why would any kid play an arcade game today when you can have games like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, or World of Warcraft.. An arcade game now just doesn't stand a chance.

Once again, I concur 100%.

I just turned 30 today so I don't remember the 80's stuff really (though I do collect them now...). I played my first video game (nintendo) in 2nd grade and didn't start hanging out in the arcade until SF2 came out on the SNES (6th grade) and I REALLY wanted to play CE. So I think SF2 was genre defining. It also defined my gaming future. If not for SF2 I wouldn't own any arcade games.

As far as X-men. I own a dedicated but it does get quite boring. I would much rather have TMNT. I think Final Fight was more genre defining than X-men. I could go back to Bad Dudes and Double Dragon also...

I don't remember the lines and such in the 80's so I can only go by what I remember. There was always a line to play the first Mortal Kombat. Mortal Kombat 2 always had an INSANE line to play it. Tekken 2 and 3 had pretty good lines also. Many here will not agree but Killer Instinct had good replay value to me. It also had the longest lines of any arcade game I can remember. In fact when I graduated in 1998 from high school I worked for Namco at Alladdin's Castle over the summer. We had a converted KI2 machine (was an MK originally) I had just bought a KI pcb and HDD. I had no six-button cab to test it in so my boss allowed me to bring it in and set it up in the KI2 cab to test it. We set it up and turned it on an got busy with other customers so we had to go up front to where the redemption counter was. Eventually we got caught up and noticed a huge crowd at the back of the arcade. That was where the low-earners were kept including KI2 (inferior to KI btw...). We went back there and there was a long line to play the game even though it was 5 years old and two years older than KI2. We had the machine pulled away from the wall and the back panel was off the machine but people didn't care, they just kept putting quarters in it. They were awful sad at closing time. I went back to work several days later and was surprised when I had a number of people ask me what happened to the KI machine. They were sad when I explained that I was just testing my pcb.

Long story short. I would have to put KI on MY personal top 10 list based on my experiences.

I agree with others that the newer console games are awesome and I play them myself. However, to say that arcade games dont stand a chance, I think is camparing apples to carmel apples with nuts on it. My older son loves the xbox 360 and wii, but plays my Rygar machine a lot, and in fact is very fond of Rampage WT, Nibbler, Galaga and Contra, he asks me to play these all the time, so I think the arcade cabinets command respect of the young kids. My sons friends bring quarters over sometimes!!! I love it, but to be honest, when they keep asking me to play Moonwalker by MJ on the mame machine, I tell them to boot up the XBOX.....kids...

The fact that Donkey Kong wasn't on the list makes the list invalid...

I can't believe I just watched that... NBA JAM? Daytona? X-Men? Golden Tee?

I thought they were going by the amount of revenue generated, then they said something about popularity... or whatever it was.

THAT is what happens when you have a 19 year old kid make a top 10 list... What happens? Robotron doesn't make the list! That's what happens! Donkey Kong doesn't make the list. Space Invaders gets a passing mention?! It caused a friggin' quarter shortage in the US and made the Japanese mint run over time to keep 100yen coins in circulation because they were locked up in SI machines (a quarter's a quarter... but 100yen? That's about a dollar... they were paying a almost a dollar per game and they STILL had a shortage!)!
