Hey y'all!

I recently picked up a Toobin that has some pretty wild graphics issues. When I first got it and entered the test mode, it would start up in the rom check test. It was showing a few faulty roms and like an idiot, I didn't write them down. Now when I enter test mode, it skips right over the rom check and goes into the other tests. I can't get the rom check to launch at all.

I have a guy that can burn some new rims for me but I can't get to that test screen to identify which ones are having issues. Any tips?

I think you have to power the game up with the test switch closed to get the full RAM/ROM test. you can't enter it while the game is on, I think most you get is monitor patterns and audits.

I'll give that a whirl today. Tha ks for the tip!

Don't go burning ROMs first, start by looking at the sockets for bad pins which is common for Atari games of this era. Remove the ROMs carefully with a small flat blade screwdriver and don't put the blade of the screwdriver on the board for leverage, you can damage the board.

If you don't see damage you'd be better off to simply validate the ROMs which saves a few steps.. The guy that can burn them for you can test them first.

Self test starts on chapter 2. I don't have easy access to my Toobin or I would confirm the process for you. But from the manual as soon as self test is entered you should have full access to all diagnostics. And as soon as the self test switch is turned off the game should revert to attract mode. Of course manuals often omit proper instructions and have errors so this could be incorrect.

I tried it in MAME, with cheats enabled to get it to error out for me :) with test switch closed (ON) and turning game on you should see a red screen and if any errors they should appear there. then it will progress to control test and other things and sound and video whatever.

I'm not familiar with Toobin hardware, was it like a consolidated System 2?

No, System 2 boards used the T-11 processor, Toobin is 68000 based. Probably more like Cyberball.

[edit] - yes, like these systems. Though Oddly it says know Atari 68000 hardware and no mention of Cyberball/Quantum??

I pulled the rims out a couple weeks ago to clean them up and reset them. I'll take another run at that and see if I need to relow some solder on the connections.

Ok, cleaning/inspecting the individual chips is only half of the process. Did you inspect the physical state of the ROM sockets on the PCB? See here:

Ignore the system 2 specific discussion but at the end of that post it talks about the most common problem but if you review the thread (the APB boards) you'll see that some sockets have just rotted out.

The problem with mine is that it skips right over the rom test and starts with the control test and then all the others in the sequence laid out in the manual. Someone else suggested powering on with the test switch engaged to launch the rom test so I'll give that a shot today.

I did not. Will give that a good look today. That's for the help. I think I have a few directions to go on today from this thread. Thanks for the help.

It appears that (after reading the linked manual) that the RAM/ROM tests are passing and that's why you end up at the Controls test. This would indicate that you have some other board issue.

  • The manual does not specify that you need to power up in self test to see the RAM/ROM test results (such as System 2 boards require).

  • The manual indicates that if all RAM/ROM tests pass it will automatically advance to the Control Tests after about 6 seconds.
