Saw this pop up on CL earlier and was wasn't sure what the heck it was. After realizing it was a DK conversion, I ran over and took a look at it. Cabinet was in good shape, screen was crisp, so I forked over the cash and am going back to pick it up in the morning. Hopefully I can convert it back to a DK with a little bit of effort.

Heh, Herbie's chips will be stashed away safe and sound, and possibly sold to someone who wants to give him the love he deserves. I'd probably leave the CP as is, and see about getting a replacement CP to turn into a DK cp.

As for getting it back to being a DK....

From what I'm reading, I'll need a full set of 12 EPROMs and 3 PROMs, and assuming I can pull the z80 from the herbie daughterboard.

Looks like a full set of what I need shipped from Mikes Arcade runs $120, which is a bit rough. Anyone else have ideas on where to get chips burned? Thinking I could check with steph at hobbyroms.com or with channelmanic.

So ive never heard of this game...EVER yet its showing an 84 out of 100 on the front page. WTF.
yeah, i have no idea how it's an 84 when there are only 3 records of it.

it was on cl for 265, ended up being about 280 with tax, as the place selling it was some sort of pawn shop or something like that.

Does it even have a Z80? I thought these used a different processor...not that Z80's cost much ;) Anyway, I'm with pookdolie and Steve W...leave it as Herbie and get a different DK board if you want to play DK :)

I have a Herbie kit if anyone is interested. Heck, its boxed up and ready.

yeah, i have no idea if it has a z80 in it, i just assumed that since you had to take it out to plug in the daughterboard that the daughterboard accepted the z80. if not, probably the cheapest part to replace.

Someone here recently sold a Herbie kit and put up a video of the game in action.

That'd be me ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZ3eZuyTHjI

Very nice grab, it will be a cinch to reconvert back to DK. And no, Herbie's daughtercard does not use the original Z80A CPU, so you will be needing one of those in addition to the aforementioned EPROMs and PROMs. I have an extra DK EPROM/PROM set I could probably part with...

The control panel should be easy peasy, the Herbie part is simply a plexi overlay like the DK CPO. So you can unbolt it, box it away, and put on a DK one with no regrets. However, if you have Herbie sideart on the machine, you might want to actually preserve that - even though it's not an A or B-list game, it is rare. There was a member here selling a set of NOS sideart last year, but he moved and stopped responding. That's the only example of the sideart I've seen.

It's that little fat nothing named Herbie. Never knew he made it to a conversion kit. If there was a title or splash screen with Herbie in all his fat glory, I'd be up for buying that kit. Neat find.

Here are some pics of the cabinet. Inside is pretty clean...can anyone confirm the power looks original? Just wondering since there is an electrical outlet with the monitor and the marquee light plugged in. Not familiar with Nintendo cabs to know if that's how they did things.

Yes, that's original--and that outlet is 100 volts, not 110.

It is also run through the isolation transformer. So whatever you do, DO NOT plug that monitor into a standard outlet. It will sustain severe damage if you do. I'm thinking that since its already been converted, why not go with Mario Bros or Vs. Dr. Mario. Just because its a DK cabinet doesn't mean it has to be restored. It can be perfectly happy running another Nintendo game. However, its your business, whatever you want to do. Herbie might be a good game, I haven't played it.

And now I see a DK near cleveland that would cost me less than if I were to try and convert this guy back to DK. Days like this I really wish I had a vehicle large enough to transport a game myself, i'd already be on the road to get it.
