Tokens - how much would it cost to get custom made ones?

I'm about to do a run of tokens myself actually, two sides custom, to use as part of my business cards. I'm going to be doing .900's, mainly again because of change machine compatibility. Not many change machines that I see have the hoppers for coins larger than quarters.

For 5,000 of them it's going to run $600 for the tokens, plus $400 for the die charges for custom on both sides.

So a lot of you either already have your own tokens or are in the process of getting your own tokens. I need to find people who would like to have new customized tokens but haven't already started to do something about it and who can't afford to have them made without going in on them with a group of people.

I still love the idea of a KLOV/VAPS token and honestly I am surprised it hasn't already been done at some point. I am hoping that I just need to keep this thread alive until enough people see it so I am going to go ahead and try to do the legwork and get pricing.

But now I have a long drive today to go visit my nephew in the hospital. Poor guy was at a party and tried to light a fire not knowing that someone had put gasoline on it prior and he got burned very badly. Still in the ICU but I hear he is going to be ok.

Just chiming in to say I am currently in the process of completing an order of tokens for our collecting group like TheShanMan said.

I designed our tokens and worked with the mint. I can answer any questions.

I will say that most coin mints offer ZCP (Zinc Copper Plated) tokens. They are cheaper, but don't order them. They are too light and will get stuck in most coin mechs. Go with brass.

Just curious what the cost of the tokens you chose to make were? Basically total # of tokens and total cost?

is the cost similar to what HHaase mentions below?

If so and someone was making them for a community like this I think the best way to make the project happen would be to start off looking for a minimum of investors/preorders
for example

10 people paying $100 and getting 500 tokens each

or

20 at $50 = 250 tokens each

40 at 25 = 125 tokens

I think this would be an easier way to raise the cash to get things done. Personally I don't run my games off tokens but I'd still invest because it would be cool to have custom tokens. Personally I'd be in at either the $50 or $25 mark. Of course we would have to agree on design.

For our run of 500 .984 brass tokens with custom art on both sites, it will be roughly $1070 which includes shipping. Prices across the board between mints are very similar, so you'll want to get samples and see quality since you'll essentially be paying the same price wherever you go.

Your price breakdown is pretty much exactly how we are doing it. It's worked great so far and we are just about ready to pull the trigger on an order.

Did you price lager quantities? If so how much was the difference in price. Think I looked into this years ago and IIRC the largest part of the start up price was making the plates. Once these were made the cost per token was relatively low.

Yeah. For the size of the group, and for people willing to buy in... 5000 seemed to be the sweet spot.

10000 is cheaper per token, but that put the initial bill up to $1500.

Most places will let you order smaller quantities without extra charge (like 1000) after your initial order because yes, the die plates are costly.

My local collecting group is about to do a run of tokens 5000 for $1000. I'd suggest .984's too. That really isn't limiting as the Bally games just need a very slight dremeling of the coin slot for them to fit. That said I'm not really interested in klov tokens because I have more than enough and I chipped in for 500 more from the local group. Darthphunk is the guy who is doing our run of tokens if you have questions about having them minted.

The Bally slots were a very minor issue, it was the Change Machine that was the deciding factor. .900 will work without modification to the Change Machine, .984 were too big and would jam in my machine without modification or replacement of the Hopper.

Yes, that's true. I got large coin hoppers for my big brown. Otherwise I would have modified the quarter hoppers. Supposedly it's pretty easy but I can't say from personal experience. I would have stuck with .984's either way though because they're more common and it meant I could use chuck e cheese tokens and whatnot. I also already had some mame tokens.

Freaky I just left the beach with a pocketful of tokens and searched the same site about making some. 195 per side is what they said for the die and the coins were about 10 to 15 cents each depending on quantity. I too would be interested in a klov token in substitution of something with my name plastered on one side. You can put me down as a investor in the project if you decide to go with it. I would need to see the design obviously before I threw money at it but highly interested!

Easy? Probably, from a labor standpoint. But wouldn't you have to replace the whole coin lifter plate and chain assembly? That can't be cheap.

You'll have to get Greg's permission in order to get a token with either KLOV or VAPS on it. Not sure how he might feel about it.

I have contacted him and am just waiting to hear back. Maybe he can decide the .900 vs .984 question. :)

Since I have not bought any token mechs yet and do not have any coin machines to worry about, it doesn't really matter that much to me. Although I would prefer to not have to modify any game slots for them to work so I guess the .900 is the most attractive from that standpoint. But if I am outvoted I will go with the flow as I would just be happy to see this come to fruition.

Damn! That's awful. I can only picture how that must have gone down. Any new news? How old is he?

He's 23. I actually haven't even gotten to see him yet. We started driving to Columbia when we got word he was being transferred to St Louis so we drove back to St Louis and waited only to find out later that he wasn;t being transferred. Turns out he assumed he could just request a transfer to be closer to home and that insurance would pay for it. I guess when you are 23 you still have ideals like that. But the sad reality was that insurance would not pay for a transfer to be closer to home. He is scheduled for skin graft surgery this Thursday.

Im too cheap for all that mess. Mabye if i had a retail arcade i would think about it.

At home? Noices secondhand tokens are just fine. Plus i have a little collection growing of different tokens from all over the damn place im going to put into a shadowbox someday.

Haven't heard back from Greg yet. His status indicates that he is pretty busy so I will just try to be patient. The medication helps with that. ;-)
