I picked up a bunch of .984 tokens on eBay for what worked out to about 5¢ each.
Using tokens is great simply because it is NOT MONEY. Real coins will get spent. You will end up using your quarters for bus fare, or you will give them to your nieces and nephews for the games and they will end up buying candy at the corner store. Tokens can't be spent. You will be able to continue having the experience of dropping something into the coin slot, but you won't run out of tokens for a long time.
My brother and I were actually at odds for a while. He wanted to set all the games to freeplay, but I insisted on using coins, because it feels more like the old arcades when I use them. Getting tokens helped to put that issue to rest.
