A few months back I got a NES Challenge Set through my Dad in Iowa. He saw it at a garage sale and called me to ask if it was worth getting and sending to me. Without seeing it I told him if he could get it for $15 then I could work with that. He paid $13 and shipped it right out to me. It was missing the Super Mario Bros. 3 game so I bought a complete in box Challenge Set version SMB3 on eBay for $17. So in total I had $30 in it. Not bad since it is really in nice condition (aside from the usual yellowing).

I had plans to Retr0Bright the console and controllers, but something else came up...

A game was listed about an hour away from me that I hadn't played or heard of before. This is the case with a lot of games as I tend to use YouTube gameplay videos to see if I would be interested in them. I couldn't find anything online as for value on them (other than the occassional parts for sale). The guy was asking $100 for the game. It has water damage on the bottom 2 inches of the cab, but the game worked fine. He wanted it gone so I was able to talk him into a trade for my NES box set and got his Head-On and $30. I'll go through the game to clean it up, but I'm happy. Here's the pix...

...

I bought a Scramble from the guy about 6 months ago but didnt take the Head On.
I prefer Crash over Head-On, but its a cool find.

nice catch, but your joystick seems to be different from the one that is on my cab:

yours looks almost like a nintendo stick. any chance you could post a picture of the pane itself?

btw, i really need new sideart for my cab ;)

Nice find! I do like the front bezel design of Crash, but Head On has sweet side art. Head On really doesn't get much respect even tho the game is decent for it's time.

I need to work on the control panel a little. The joystick isn't working very well. You have to apply lots of pressure in any direction to get the desired effect.

Here's a picture of the game running...

Head On hold a lot of memories for me. It was the first video game that I ever played BITD.
I dumped HUNDREDS of $$ in that machine. I finally found one in 2001 for 500.00! Yes, I know I overpaid-even at the time it was steep- but that is my keeper. It gets a lot of play at parties, believe it or not. The ladies seem to show more interest in that game than most others except Centipede. I don't know what that's all about. FWIW, I have a NOS control panel overlay and a few control panels. Your joystick looks correct. They were VERY difficult to move as I guess that was part of the gameplay. Every one I've seen was like that. PM me if you need any more info. I am all things Head-On!

I took the joystick assembly apart and put it back together the way I think it is supposed to be. I looked at the manual and it looked like whoever tried to work on it before positioned the shaft too far down. It looks like there was supposed to be a sheath or something to cover the threading. If this is indeed a proper joystick. See these pix compared to the previous ones...

Also, this might be dumb of me, but is there a power switch? I can't seem to locate it for the life of me.

Wow, I picked up a Head On last night too for $25 at auction.

Mine has the threaded shaft joystick with no sheath as well.

Was that the one in Greeley? Was the jukeboxes and good that he was selling also?

Yeah, this is the one from Greeley. I could see the jukes at the side of the garage, but I was too busy looking at the Tron project that was between me and them. He said he wouldn't sell it and it made me sad a litlle, but in reality it was too much of a project for me.

Cool find, cool game. It's been at the Seattle show. I think Oryk Zinyo owns that one. Fun to play on the 2600 too.

Excellent trade. You purchased a museum piece.

(And how many people can say this on any given sunnyday?)

Yest, there are those who would argue the same thing regarding the NES kit,...

...but Head On is bigger. And BIGGER so often wins the argument.

Good job, dude. GOOD trade.
