The most hideous pick up so far in my 4 yrs of collecting. A $100; non working, complete Asteroids. Can you believe the seller was asking $950?!?!..i offered $50 and settled on $100...i bought it for the cone buttons for my lunar lander restore and also for the monitor...the game is horrific. The cabinet is shot and i will be parting it out. It makes me sad just one more arcade game removed from our lives but the parts will live on in other games. I can't even explain clearly the shed i pulled it out of...full of bumble bees...i cant believe i didnt get stung. The game was setting there for 7 yrs. The trash that fell.out of it when i removed the back door was insane.

A follow up to the $950 asking price. It was on fb market place for months so i messaged if they still had it and of course they did. I politely explained what they are asking for is unrealistic and why....then i said id give $50 and they countered with $100 becuase they were moving and needed it gone..i was going to counter with $75 but just didn't feel like haggling really and agreed. I get there, which was in the middle of nowhere, and it was worse in person than the pics and in a small worn down shed, full of those black and yellow bumble bees on 40 acres. The entire time i was there those things were all over the place buzzing around my head...i was actually kinda nervous. I asked the lady how she came about owning it and she said "i used to rent out mobile homes and evicted someone and this was left there. I know nothing about these things. Its been setting here in this shed for 7yrs." I asked if she ever seen it play and she said no. I told her "Lady you got the deal of the century because it is junk but a deal is a deal." and handed her the hundred bucks and said "take this hundred and buy whatever u buy to party with because u are making off like a bandit." A few years ago i bought a hideous galaga for $40 and thought it would never get worse than that but this asteroids takes the top spot in my "horrible cab experiences"but everything is there and i will get my money back on the part out for sure.

Can anyone tell me what monitor it is by looking at the pic? By the time I got it to my shed it was late at night and didnt mess with it or investigate it. I unloaded it and walked away.

That's the original model Electro-Home G05-801. The more common model was the 802.
As bad as that cabinet is, I'd try to restore it, but that's only b/c Asteroids is a personal favorite :)

It was well worth the $100 just for the experience!

Thanks for sharing this!

Personally I'd use the original cab as a template and try to rebuild it, but I'm bat-shit crazy that way so it's arguable that it would be worth the effort given they're not rare at all.

I often tell myself that any complete game is worth a hundred bucks, but that right there may be the exception. If the board and monitor work or are easy fixes you should be OK, and somebody will want that coin door even if it takes some work to bring it back. Kill the rest with fire before it lays its eggs and takes over the planet.

Yeah $100 was way over paying for this. This should give you the same amount of karma as saving a kitten from drowning or helping a blind lady across the street. I am sure you will make your money back but you won't get anything out of your time. Wish you the best on making a profit.

Nahh.. $100 is fine if the boardset and monitor are at all usable.

I don't think it would be a good template for a new cabinet, as much as it's swollen.

I'd clean up and box up all the parts and wait to find a stripped cabinet. It would be worth finding a cheap painted over cabinet from a conversion then buying new sideart from Arcadeshop or whoever for that price.

True. I even see converted asteroid cabs all the time.

I think you did fine... even at "sell it quick" prices:

Coin door - $75 as it stands
PCB - $75 untested
Monitor - $100 untested
Cone Buttons - $30
Total - $280

So sad that people will let things rot away like that. Ugh.

Hello? Owl eye coin door? That and the volcano buttons made the trip worth it right there. You could literally burn the rest and come out ahead.

This looks like a good candidate for a cabinet swap. Find a repro cab, or an empty Asteroids and there you go.
