To side art...or not to side art is the question at hand......

As I am finally getting close to completing my DK project I have a decision to make that I'd like some opinions on. To side art or not.

This is a TKG2 cab that came from Japan as a DK (converted from Radarscope at the factory). It appears to never have had sideart (no residue, outline or small chunks of art under the carriage bolts). From a historical standpoint I shouldn't put it on, but I really like the DK sideart. I am leaning towards no side art since it will be between other games most likely.

Thoughts? - Barry

Do what your heart tells you, Barry. (Don't do it!) :)

If it was me and I was planning on sandwiching it between games, I say keep it as it is and save your money. If you change your mind later, then that's cool too. Maybe buy a set and store it for the time being.

I have a very nice DK machine with partial sideart, but since it's sandwiched between games I haven't to replaced it.. and unless I get to a point where it is visable, I'm not going to either. Replacement art will always be available for DK, so it's not like you'd have to buy it now or never get it. If no one can see it and you don't care if it's there, why bother?

Being inbetween games isn't the reall issue, neither is the money. If this one never had it, would you put it on or leave it original as is. - Barry

Do what will let you enjoy the "state" of the machine most.

I try to look at a situation the way I look at home values. It really doesn't matter *AT ALL* until you're ready to sell. And at that point, it only matters to the person buying and/or your profit (or loss) margin.

Do what will make you happiest. Better still, sleep on it for awhile. You already know that you could like it better without. Once you put it on there, it will never again "never had side art".

It's not complete without the side art. Put it on. Why go through a restore and stop short because you won't be able to see it between games?

It never had it from the factory so it is is complete. I wouldn't see it as stopping short, but going further or maybe too far since it was never there to begin with. - Barry

Why would they release it from the factory with no art?

I'm pretty sure this cab came before the sideart existed. It's a TKG2. It was converted from radarscope at the factory before shipping. It has all of the existing original artwork which has no copyright info screened on it and a 2 piece bezel. -Barry

Dooooood, post some nice high res pictured of that puppy from every conceivalbe angle.

The cab looks good. Did you paint it?

It looks like you have all of the original artwork (without any trademark or copyright info.) That being the case, I'd leave it off. You're probably right that it never had side art. Also, any side art you get is going to have the copyright and trademark info on it, so it won't go will all of that original artwork anyway.

On the other hand, if you were using a bunch of repro artwork I might flip flop on it a little. The sideart looks really good on a red dk. I don't think many had sideart though (it's possible that none came with sidart, but my guess would be that if any did, they were TKG3s).

I put side art on my red one, BIG difference in appearence (if you can see it.)

I would say with 99% certainty that has never had SA on it. I remember being a kid and playing on a red DK. No side art either. I restored an RS cab and added the side art. Much like you - I really love the side art. Mine sits on the outside of the row where it can be seen though.

The cab is in very good condition. It has it's fair share of nicks and scratches, but no major dents at all. I was very suprised at the overall condition. I took the speaker panel to home depot and had them color match the paint and touched up the scratches and nicks. At very close you can see them, but stand back 5 feet and they almost disappear. I'll post some pics here shortly. - Barry
