So I am about to finally get started on my SF II restore and I was wondering, does it make sense to throw a top plexi on for home use?

If so what are you preferred methods of mounting it to the CP. I have seen some hatchet jobs with wood screws or rusted out security bolts, etc.

I've thought about doing this myself, but I don't think home use necessitates it.
Ops did it to keep people from peeling their overlays off, gouging holes, carving their names in them with knives or burning them up with cigarettes. Unless you have some rough friends with OCD tendencies peeling things up, you should be cool without it for many years to come :)

The only issue I could see arising is wear on the CPO from a dust cover on the joystick.

I don't think for the amount of play it will get that the CPO is going to wear down. Though I am getting repro ink jet.

I was considering putting plexi on my cp as well. If I do it I'll just use some thin plexi and let the button holders be what holds it in place instead of using extra bolts or screws on the cp.

sounds like the way to do it right there.

When I restored my NBA Jam TE with a NOS CPO, I left the plexi off. I kept it and could get a new one made if I wanted it, but I think it just looks cheap. For use in your home, you should be fine.

You'll have no problem for home use without a plexi cover.
The materials used to protect the CPO artwork are very durable.
As one poster mentioned, unless someone intentionally tries to destroy it, it will last for a very long time.

Yeah, I am not too fond of the plexi look. I guess, ultimately the quality of my repro artwork will dictate wether or not to go with it.

I have one of the Koam Big Blue cabs so I am going with a CPO from Game on Grafix or COC out of Ontario for my CPO. I don't think I'll find a NOS CPO for it.

The MKII CPO I just got from GoG looks extremely durable....won't be applying plexi myself.

I think you only should do that in case the original also has it like this.

I mean, here in Europe the Zaccaria's are pretty popular, and have it originally like this

I did a custom CPO for a guy at DLF for his Astrowars, and that came out pretty neat.

But if it is not originally there, i would not do it.

I always apply plexi unless it's a game that didn't have it like Pac Man. Midway games like NBA Jam MK-MK4 came with plexi. I apply plexi on my SF2 cabs as well. It's not hard to cut plexi once you've done it enough times. IMO it doesn't cheapen the game, if done right you hardly notice it.
