we were bullshiting about games and our current projects and i brought up the fact that my space invaders deluxe b@w monitor took a dump
well he said he had a monitor for me walks me up to one of the rows in his warehouse and says there it is
i am greated with this

its an atari starship 1 with pretty much perfect side art totaly complete but only partily working only bad thing is is the plastic shroud is cracked all to hell

now a few ?
what is this game worth i have never heard of it(yea it was made before i was born lol)
is it a game with good replay value
should i try and patch up the plastic shroud and repair the game board or should i just grab the monitor for my space invaders and run
anyone intrested in the cab or any parts i really dont want to mess with it but if its a great game i will

yea it is a really sweet looking cab but i have soooo many projects now its not even funny and after bringing this one in i got a total ass reaming (was told no more machines two cabs before the gorf cab lol)

id like to yank the monitor throw my space invaders monitor in it and give it to someone that will cherish the starship one
the side art really is pretty much perfect

guess ill have to open up mame and see how the game play is ugggggg damn decisions

Like they said cool and rare but IMHO it wasn't exactly Atari's pinnacle of game design. The sound was what really turned me off and I like the sound in Zookeeper so you know I like the strange stuff.

The bezel could probably be patched up with crazyglue and something to reinforce it from behind unless it is brittle from UV exposure.

found it in my mame list and played it for a few and man such a sweet cab but what a super bad game its like they knocked off star trek
the ships even look like the klingon bird of prey and the enterprise

ill hold off on parting it out for now and pull the monitor for my space invaders(i hope i dont find any other deals on games before i get a chance ill get shot if i bring in another game before i unload a few )
when i get a chance ill recap the space invaders monitor and try my luck at getting the game up and running

man really tho what a baaaaad game lol im all for the oldies but man what the heck are these sposed to be kind a reminds me of the space herpes from ice pirates

yeah, i just gave it a shot too and its a stinker. kind of fun, i can imagine people loving it back in the days of pong, when they were probably just amazed to be able to control something on the television. i could see dropping a couple quarters in it even now, but not anything more than that. too bad it doesnt have sound on mame.

Only 3500 were made!! from 1977

The object of Starship 1 is to destroy alien spacecraft while maneuvering through star and asteroid fields.
The game uses a first person perspective on a black-and-white monitor. The player's ship is controlled with a control yoke that is connected to two potentiometers. There is also a lever that controls whether the ship is moving "fast" or "slow".[1] Compared to common arcade games of the time, Starship 1 was comparatively advanced, but used quite a bit of analog technology that would become less common in arcade games in following years.
As enemies appear onscreen, the player tries to center the enemy in the crosshairs and shoot it with his "phasors" by pulling a trigger on the control yoke. Alternatively, the player has 5 "proton torpedoes" per game that can be fired by pressing a large white button on the dashboard. This will destroy any enemy ship on screen, regardless of whether it is in the crosshairs (which are painted directly on the screen).
The enemy ships are roughly patterned after ships from the Star Trek: The Original Series and the title device from the 1967 episode "The Doomsday Machine".
The player does not view the game monitor directly; the monitor is recessed in the cabinet, and the player views a reflected image of the monitor in a half-silvered mirror with a space background.

Don't part it out, just as the others have suggested. It's pretty rare, has a sweet cabinet, and the gameplay is really not that bad. I'm sure there is a way you can fix the monitor shroud, too.

man crap now i have to keep it arggggg
was digging around in the cab pluged it in game would not come on (just got a constant ringing sound)
checked the manual and then tested voltages as the conector
10v ac is at 9.89
25vdc is at 14 .xx

well looked around a bit more jiggled some conectorrs pulled them appart and reseated them
hit the coin switch to coin it up and see it would play blind bam i got an immage on the screen arggggg
tried to play and it would not start and i still had the constant ringing screeching sound
dug around a bit more and found the test switch fliped it the other way bam now it plays

now for the bad seems to work ok but i can move up and left and right but no down being that its a pot based control system that does not make much sense unless the lower secton of the pot is bad

the other problem is the sound is present but verry low

dmmit now i have to figure out what empty cab i have is getting the axe my stern pac or the cheif cab that my gorf was originaly in

anyone local need any empty cabs

You don't have to keep it just because it deserves to be saved. Find a collector that is interested in restoring it and you can get some space back and a classic still gets saved. Your not in this alone. :)

lol yea i know
it really is a sweet looking machine and i really love the side art but the game itslef is a little lacking in the replay department

problem is around here i have a hard time unloading restored games for a good price(let alone one that needs some work) and with the game originaly being purchased just for the monitor to save my space invaders id hate to sell it with the monitor in it and then have my space invades still in need of a new monitor (well guess i could just bite the bullet and recap it myself)

if anyone wants it ill let it go with my space invaders monitor in it (it needs a recap) for 100$ but hurry if it does not leave here soon im going to start rebuilding the plastic shroud and just accpt it as one of my collection

damn i need room lol

ok well a little movng around and some creative placment of my parts shelvs and i can officaly say i do have room for the starship 1 (my poor space invaders is stil blind tho )
i dont know what im going to do when i bring home my super mario bros tommorow tho lol guess ill have to talk my way into allowing one more game in the main basement area

i still ahve to find a spot for all my pc parts and misc arcade parts that are in the middle of the room lol

and really the old starship is growing on me lol game play is not to bad with the flight controls (way beter than amme and a keyboard )and the cab artwork kinda makes you feel like you are in a cokpit

also just found out that the machine came from canada as it has 25 cent canada coin mechs in it

ill repair it like i did old airplane trim when i did custom interiors

reinforce the cracks and missing areas by using this special chicken wire looking stuff that has an adheasive on it so it sticks in place then use bondo to patch it up sand smooth apply texture if needed (the shroud looks pretty smooth so i probaly wont bother with a texture )then spray the entire thing with sem plastics paint to cover the bondo and to make it look all nice and new

well just about got the thing restored
cleaned off the bezl glass, the monitor tube, and the half silverd glass. and now i can actually see a nice bright immage of the game weeeee

upon removing the plastic shroud found why the marquee was not lit (and why the plastic is broken up)someone undid the top three screws on the plastic shroud and then pulled the top of the shroud out to totaly remove the light fixture without removing the cp wich is what cracked the plastic

installed a new fixture

adjusted and cleaned the pots on the controlls now i can move all directions

was going to start on the plastic repair but it started to rain so that will ahve to wait
and need to find the horz pos adjustment and it will be done

here it is working fully and all lit up
