No I'm not gonna link my secret but I found someone selling a Super Offroad project for $200 and it was one of my favorite games back in high school. He tried to unsuccessfully convert it to the track pack and it wasn't booting but the rest of the cab is ok. He also has the original roms...

If I'm lucky I can just find a diagram for the rom swap(we'll put the roms that worked before back in) and if I'm unlucky I'm back here paying several hundred dollars for a working boadset(no idea what those go for). Also the cab is huge so I'm not sure what to do with it. Should I go after it?(I really want to)

Sounds like one I've seen offered up a few times. Looks like fun, plus if it's the one I saw he's offering extra parts and whatnot. Perfect!

I am on the opposite side on this one. I haven't heard people talk about it much but I was told by an old op that these boards suicide over time.
Every one of these either has a board issue (that can't be fixed because nobody fixes them), or will have an issue that can't be fixed because nobody fixes them.

eldoradogames used to fix them but can't source some of the parts they need anymore.

get it if you want, but if you have a board issue, getting a working board will be $200 and you never know if it will work forever or start to deteriorate.

This. I had one and got rid of it since it's basically unsustainable. Not to mention the cabinet is fuck off huge. Been thinking about getting a Super Sprint since it's kind of the same game.

I remember trying to convert mine to track pack using ROMS from a non-working boardset. I couldn't get it to boot, and after researching apparently there was a small security IC that needed to be swapped over with the ROMs. Keep that in mind, it might be a simple issue.

If it's a game the OP remembers playing in his youth, wouldn't it be a worthwhile pick up, even if he has to resort to using something to emulate the original game board down the line? A big part of the nostalgia for me is the original cabinets we played these games in.

I think there is something that fails in the track pac kit(security chip?). I was able to convert a non working track pac pcb back into the orignal game. So I think some of those doa track pac boards might actually be good.

The biggest problem you will have will be finding the old roms locations. The ink on the labels is usually faded. If you have an eprom reader, you can find out their locations/check if the chips are good.

If the game means that much to you, I would grab it. Maybe someday someone will figure out whats failing in them.

I'm gonna do it but since the conversion didn't work I'd planned on putting the original roms back in all along....and like you said figuring out where they go is gonna be a big pain!

I haven't been able to even find a PCB diagram for this but I emailed the seller and hopefully I can put all the chips back in the right places...

Seems to be a consistent feature of Leland cabinets. And there's soooo much wood in them, you'd think those guys owned a logging company or something. Unbelievably heavy. Even if you're not a guy who puts casters on your uprights, you will for a Leland box. I picked up what was once a Brute Force cab on the ultra-cheap and I had half a mind to turn it into firewood, except the monitor and electrical were in such great shape I figured I'd convert it into something that at least had play value.

Had one, loved it for a little while.
TERRIBLE free play game, but great party game non-the-less. This was a definite quarter muncher game, with free play you just max out the trucks and keep playing.

No suicide boards, but likely not easy to repair as mentioned. Mine worked great, thought the Trac Pak would boost the game, found a non-working TP board for $50 and swapped the ROM's plus the security chip (prom on lower board). Track Pak will work fine, my bet is the security chip is the culprit.

All that said, it is a cool game if you have the spare room. I still have a Gauntlet which is also a quarter muncher, but smaller at least!

What's the fun in just adding as many credits as you want to max the trucks? Maye a couple for nitros like I did back in the day but I just wanted to win cash in races lol

Anyway some logistics problems may prevent me from getting it but we'll see.

+1 - hard to repair

+1 - cab is huge and unwieldy

-1 - Off Road is much better than Super Sprint (well, Championship Sprint (2pl))

I have a working Super Offroad. It is HUGE. It takes two people just to get the dolly under it to make it move. My arcade is in the basement and after getting the SO home it has become a garage machine. My kids love it but they figured out the max out on free play and kinda takes the fun out. The game is a fun classic none the less.

I hate to say it but if worst case pans out of the boards being toast couldn't you MAME the game to run off a PC? It wouldn't be authentic per say but at least it would work and a cheap PC would almost cost as much as a new game board set.
