Picked up a dedicated TMNT turtles in time cab over the weekend but the sound is not working. Pulled the board to test in another cab, no go. Board is in outstanding shape, not a spec of dirt on it. Looks like it's never even been removed from the little cardboard anti-static box inside the cab. This board doesn't have a goo covered amp thankfully like xmen. Not sure where to start on the troubleshooting here, i suppose I can check for voltage at the amp but I wanted to post up in case there were any gotchas with this game. Let me know if you have ideas!

Thanks

First things I would do is verify the dip switches, look for any sound pots and try turning them back and forth.

You are going in the right direction by looking at the amp first and let us know what voltages you get.

I think this pcb may have had a seperate audio connection for Stereo mode. I know Simpsons did, not sure if Turtles in Time did, I can't remember.

I've had problems with the sound being screwed up on the first TMNT so I think their sound section screws up a lot :( Maybe Turtles in Time is better, though.

Removing the heat sink on the audio amp revealed the pins were dark which is usually a sign of wear. I will take the board to the bench today and reflow the pins just in case and test for voltage. I was thinking if I needed, I could probably just grab the sound from external audio connector on the board into another powered amp from some pc speakers until i find a replacement amp for the board.

Ended up reflowing the solder on each pin on the audio amp. Did not help. I then verified it was receiving +12v (which was actually +13.1v). I reseated all the roms just for the heck of it. I checked the schematic, mono sound comes out of the +/- pins on jamma edge, stereo speaker out comes out of the small 4 pin connector, but it says it is already amplified. I checked the soft dip and tested the game in both stereo and mono modes, no luck. I hooked up a small external speaker to the 4 pin, no luck either. I turned up the speaker volume pots as loud as i could to see if i could hear a faint bit of sound (normally you should be able to hear something if the sounds unamplified) but i didn't hear anything. Did a final careful examination on all components, no scratches, cut traces, broken legs or anything like that on the entire board and its shiny clean.

So i'm stumped. It appears to me that the game is not generating any sound at all and the amplifier is in fact working. When i turn up the sound pots, you can tell on the speaker from the very slight amp hum.

I'll do that next. Too bad someone doesn't already offer a cap kit for these amps. I just picked up a simpsons today which is the same hardware and im sure that could use it too.

TiT has a custom surface mount chip in the sound section. I've had 2 of them on my bench with dead ones. Good luck.

Yea, i saw that and wondered what it was- the one that has 053260 1121-0042 and konami stamped on it?

So this thing shorts out and dies and its all over?
